Overachieving Pithiness in the Writer’s Workshop
by Jenners • 02/19/2009 • Writers Workshop • 36 Comments
Well, it is Thursday so it must be Writer’s Workshop time over at MamaKat’s. I’m going to do all five prompts (the overachieving part) but do them very short and to-the-point (the pithiness part).
This week the prompts were as follows.
Prompt 1: If you were starring on American Idol TONIGHT and HAD to sing, what song would you choose and why?
My Pithy Answer: A Tom Waits song — I mean, I can’t sound any worse than him, right? How about “Cold Cold Ground.”
Prompt 2: Take a picture of yourself right this minute without primping and explain to us why it is you have not washed your hair today.
My Pithy Answer: NO FREAKING WAY! I’ve done enough self-humiliation in the last few posts! I mean yesterday I told you about when I pooped my pants, and two Fridays ago I documented my descent into nerdiness. What more do you want, Mama Kat? My head on a platter?
Prompt 3: I just asked Pat to help me with a writing prompt so here’s his: “What do you think about the NBA All Star game”…blech.
My Pithy Answer: Yeah … blech.
Prompt 4: What’s your number one pet peeve? Develop a punishment for anyone caught in the act.
My Pithy Answer: Pet Peeve: People who don’t identify themselves when they call on the phone and just start talking. Punishment: I hang up on them.
Prompt 5: Write about something mean you did to a sibling growing up.
My Pithy Answer: Me? Do something mean to my younger brothers? I never did anything mean. But my middle brother once took many of my prized possessions from my room and tried to sell them back to me at a garage sale. My dad’s response? “I admire his entrepreneurship.”

I love Tom Waits. I have like… all of his albums Maybe missing a couple.
Anyway, I’ve really missed you – been so busy keeping my new years resolutions I haven’t been able to stop by. Just wanted to catch up, and say Hello.
You have such a wonderful positive blog – thanks.
Wow, your blog wouldn’t let me comment for a while, but I finally made it through!
Ter sounds like an amazing woman overcoming tremendous heartache!
Another fun post to read
Sounds like your brother knew how to talk himself out of trouble. I can imagine what your reaction must have been when you saw your stuff on the garage sale table. Smoke must have been coming out of your ears!! Thanks for referring us to Ter’s blog.
Wow. Ter does sounds amazing. I will have to check her out.
p.s. I totally hang up on people who do not identify themselves over the phone.
Now I’ve got to go see what the pooping your pants thing is all about. Great answers to the prompts.
Filled with witty charm as usual! Thanks for sharing Ter’s link…just found her yesterday myself…she’s amazing:)
Great post!!! Brothers are such brats!
Great answers and excellent post. LOL at your brother grabbing your things for a yard sale. Where is the brat today? (I bet you are his favorite sibling…;))
Have a great weekend!
Ha! Your answer to the NBA All-Star game is shared by many other today!
I love how you bring attention to your readers. How sweet of you.
Off to check her out right now.
Sounds like something my brother would of tried.
Oh I just LOVE that idea of a spotlight on a regular reader…why didn’t I think of that!?!
Clicking away and visiting your reader!!
I can’t believe he tried to see you your own stuff!
That sounds like something I would have done!
Trying to sell your stuff back to you is a page from my very own playbook
I was just at Ter’s blog and I popped over to say hi.
Love the ‘pithy’ answers. I know I say this every week…I need to do this. *sigh*
I’m impressed you keep up with 2 blogs – I can barely manage one.
Very nice. And I agree you have there has been a lot of self humiliation around here but I am sure the Mama Kat wants the head.
I don’t blame you on prompt #2- I never did that meme when it was going around!
I agree…you are ambitious. Great read…thanks!
Haha! Look at you all ambitious and doing ALL of the prompts! I bow to your superior bloginess.
Oh, and I laughed SO hard when I read about you pooping your pants! hahahahhahaha
Ha – good job!! I didn’t want to post a picture yesterdy either. My hair was washed (I was at work) but I still looked like death warmed over. I’m fighting off a cold and feel (and look)like crap.
I can totally relate to your pet peeve. I also hate it when you get the “We have a very important message for you, please hold for our next operator” message. You call me and now you want me to hold. Really?!? I don’t roll that way.
I will visit Ter now. She sounds like an incredible woman.
Your dad’s response was the icing on the cake. But I would beat him over the head. You’re far too nice.
I’m going to visit Ter now!
lord you’re hilarious. but i’m keeping it short because i want to go visit your friend, ter. thanks for introducing us to an obviously amazing woman.
Ok, I have to admit that was pretty clever of your brother to try to sell you back your own things.
Good job on the assignment!
He was proud of your brothers entrepreneuership? Sounds like something my husband would say.
I’m blankin out on your game thing. I wrote one and then went blank.
You really, really, really never did anything mean to your brothers? Really? What kind of big sister are you? I’m taking back your big sister card, missy!
Great post, as usual. I love how you did them all and answered them so short and sweet. I need to take some cues from you, as I have a tendency to ramble on. and on. and on.
lol I happened to like the poopy pants post :p
So I am reading your post and all of a sudden I see my photo. That was pretty scary! I think I will have nightmares tonight!
It’s funny, a few weeks ago I was thinking of doing a “reader of the week” kind of thing but I never did get around to starting it.
Oh I hate when people call and don’t identify themselves also, more so because they are almost always bill collectors. And I’m sorry but your dads response cracked me up. I would have been so mad if a sibling did that to me though. What did you do to get him back?
This is a fabulous idea, and I’m so impressed at the pithiness that I very much want to copy you and replicate it on my blog. But, that would be pithy AND cheap. So I’m sticking to the pet peeve(s).
I had the same reaction to the picture prompt. Shhheah!
Yeah, well I struggled with the list this week – no way Jose re the photo, what’s a NBA?, no siblings, never seen American Idol – Never seen Australian Idol either.
Pet peeve is still a possibility.
That sounds like something I woulda (shoulda) done to my brother
What, no retaliation? You have to take life out on your siblings (especially younger ones). That’s what they are for! {*grin*}
