• What I’ve Been Doing The Last Two Days

    by  • 06/26/2010 • Life • 31 Comments

    • Experiencing a crazy-ass thunder and lightning storm during which I had two hysterical 5-year-olds running around screaming “We’re gonna die!!! We’re gonna die!!!!” and me saying “No, we’re perfectly fine” … until a 25-foot tree fell down onto our house and I began to have doubts.
The fallen tree in the side yard

    • Observing a goldfinch recover from the shock to falling 25-feet to the ground during the storm.
    One severely freaked out goldfinch
He looked a lot better after two hours.
He was gone in the morning.
I did not find a body so I think he made it!

    • Sweating in 92-degree heat while waiting for the power to go back on (which took 28 very long and sweaty hours).
    • Thinking how much it would suck to live in the olden days without electricity.
    • Supervising a pack of children who somehow decided to spend the “heat day” at my house.
    • Watching everything in my freezer and fridge slowly melt and turn bad.
    • Helping cut the tree apart. Well, I didn’t cut it … I was given the task of carrying the pieces to the curb.
The tree trunk after being denuded of branches

    • Finally, blissfully, getting power back and getting sweet sweet air conditioning and computer back. Of course, now I’m way too tired to blog other than to write this post about our little adventures the past few days. In fact, I think I’m heading off to bed!

Hoping your last few days have been cooler and more relaxing than mine,

P.S. With no electricity, I’m real behind in all things blog-related. I’ll be back in the swing of things eventually … unless the storm that is supposed to come on Tuesday is a real doozy.

Holy crap! So glad that big A. tree didn't fall on your house! I just said to my husband over the weekend that I didn't know how people did it back before A/C because we have had days and days of humid temps in the mid to upper 90s around here.

Ugh I know all about no electricity. I'm glad no one died! I think this is the first time I've ever said this to YOU but you have a spammer…up there between sometimes sophia and myorii…each of those dots goes to a different porn site. Thought you'd like to know (either to get rid of it or start visiting lol jpjp)

Just the thought of having those long pioneer skirts wrapped around and stuck to my skin makes me break out in a sweat! YUCK!

I'm terribly sorry about your house falling down, but the picture in my mind of those little ones running around your house, convinced they're gonna die, made me chuckle! Glad you've got your life back! : )

Bless you in that heat! I've gotten completely out of the habit of 90-something heat. It's 72 here today and I feel like I'm going to die. I've gone all soft.

My mother assures me that I should be glad I'm here, several degrees in latitude north, rather than home. Because I would die.

Oh my! That's quite a big tree that fell over! At least it looked like it fell next to your house and not on top and then INTO your house…that would definitely be bad…especially with the storm coming.

It seems like the weather has gone all 2012 on us lately in Japan too. We've had some major parts of Japan get flooded after having 24 hours of heavy rainfall. It's not that unusual that it rains in the summer since it's so humid but we've never had to deal with so much rain that it would cause flood warnings…

What a mess! So glad to see that your house didn't sustain any serious damage… or at least the photos don't show it. Very scary… the picture of the poor bird is priceless.

I can't believe anyone survived the good old days! I'm glad everyone(and your house) is ok. That is one of my big fears. We are surrounded by ginormous oak trees.

That bird looks f'd up! LOL

I'm sorry you lost power and stuff. We went thru that a week ago or so and it IS awful (and ours was only about 9 hours). I, too, wondered how I'd have made it way back when before a/c, lights, and internet. Glad your okay and fully electrified!

Oh, I bet that was scary for everyone. Watching food melt does that to me. Terrifiying. Oh, and there was that tree…

So glad the tree didn't break any windows or part of your house. I remember those big storms.. I don't really miss them.

Bless your heart! We had a bad storm like that a couple of years ago that trashed a tree in the front yard. On top of that, we lost electricity for 14 hours which also meant no water, since we drew water from a well that was powered by, you guessed it, electricity! Glad you and the family are safe and sound.

Wow, it looks like the tree just missed smashing your house! Glad no one was hurt. But being without power is a drag.

On Wed we had an earthquake and a tornado in Ontario. Did this happen on Wed? If so, bad weather day for a lot of people, I think.

I never feel our earthquakes, this one was a 5.0. When it happened I thought I was dizzy! LOL

HOly cow! What an adventure! We have 2 wee ones who are super scared of thunderstorms. A tree hitting the house would only confirm their fears. Glad no one was hurt, even the wee birdie.

A 24-hour period of no power is a good way to test whether you have the makings of a pioneer – at least you didn't have to burn furnishings to stay warm, or melt snow over a small fire to remain hydrated.

I suppose this means any post about a future wilderness vacation is out?

Glad you're all okay, and that life will return to its usual state of loveliness!

How much chocolate did it take to get through that?!?

I think I need to go eat that Hershey bar right now after reading this post.

I think that is quite enough excitement for one post! I am glad you are all OK and have your power and A/C back. My husband took a trip to England a few weeks ago where it was in the 80's and no one there has air conditioning. He is so used to life here now that he was complaining on the phone the entire time about how terrible it was without A/C.

Was there any damage to the house when the tree fell on it?? I have a huge tree in my front yard that I'm terrified it will fall over in a storm but it'll cost $500 to get t removed!! I need to find out if it's close enough to the property line for the city to pay half. (which I'm sure they'd refuse anyway!)

hope all is fine now and no more storms!

There was something similar that happened in Bridgeport yesterday. The National Weather Service concluded that a tornado went through the area, but apparently no one witnessed a funnel cloud. There was a LOT of damage.

I myself have never seen a funnel cloud in person, and I really don't want to, either.
