Five Winners…And One Whiner
by Jenners • 11/10/2010 • Giveaway • 82 Comments
First, the winners of my October Giveaway:
- Bibliophile by the Sea won In The Woods by Tana French
- Lisa from Lisa’s Chaos won What the Dead Know by Laura Lippman
- Aging Mommy won Case Histories by Kate Atkinson
- Jenn at That Just Happened won Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
- Andrea from Good Girl Gone Redneck won Sum: Forty Tales of the Afterlives by David Eagleman
And now for the whining … and some bad news.
The bad news is that, due to some recent economic uncertainty in our household, I won’t be able to have my usual giveaways until things get more stable. We’ve got to conserve and save money wherever we can right now. (Hence, my recent acquisition of a part-time job.) So, unfortunately, giveaways on my blog are one of the things that are getting the axe. However, I will still have the occasional giveaway for review copies. Stay tuned!
And, I need to whine about the cold I’ve had for the past few days. I always forget how miserable it can be when you don’t feel well, and I’ve been feeling horrible (achy, feverish, sore throat, headache). I’ve been going to bed at 7:30 each night, which has really been cutting into my blogging time. So forgive me if I haven’t been around to visit. Hopefully I’ll be feeling better soon and will get back to my regular scheduled blogging. (By the way, I realized I just passed my two year blogging anniversary. Can’t believe I’ve made it two years!)

Hope you’re feeling better soon! Thanx for pulling my name out of the hat! I feel so lucky! :0) Seems we’re all making little cutbacks. May it get better soon.
I’m just glad it is going to a good home! I hope to get them in the mail in the next few days so be on the lookout.
sorry to hear that times are a bit tight right now–i’m hoping things will pick up soon.
also, i hope that you’re feeling better by now–i always forget how nice it is to be healthy until i have a cold that just won’t quit. feel good!!
I am finally feeling better after a very icky week. I forget too how yucky it feels to be sick. It makes me appreciate being well!
Bummer about the cold…. hope you are feeling better
Yeah … I’ve turned the corner and feel human again. : )
oh, don’t feel bad about anything but that cold! and btw, the description/ teaser for this post, was perfect! i hope you feel better soon!
Thanks … and today was the first day I felt like a normal person again. Thank goodness.
oh, so glad to hear it!!
Happy Blog anniversary! My two year is also this month.
Hope you get better soon
We must have started right around the same time. Aren’t you just amazed how your blog has changed and grown over time? I can’t imagine NOT blogging now … it feels like something I’ve just always done now.
It sounds like you have good reasons for whining. I hope things are better soon, both financially and health wise.
Thanks for your well wishes. Today is the first day I’m feeling much better … so I think this darn cold will be leaving soon! Good riddance. (And maybe I can stay up past 8:30 tonight!)
Ugh. I’ve got the dreaded bug too — hoping yours disappears quickly.
And yeah, the economy is bad everywhere. No worries/
This is the first day I actually feel like I’m going to get well again. I tend to get overly dramatic when I’m sick … like I can’t imagine feeling better ever again. Hope you get rid of your bug soon!!!
I am sorta watching finances as well. Furloughs have ended for me but the family business is not doing well. It’s like a dark cloud of doom is hanging over my head. I don’t care for it. I hope your situation improves soon.
This dark cloud seems to be hanging over everybody. I hope this whole situation improves for everyone. We all need a bit of sunshine I think.
look at this! a little whining and you get 60-70 responses.
I still hope you are feeling better soon.
Well, you really have to divide that by 2 because it counts my replies so really, I got 30 to 35 responses, which is more than I’m getting at home!
Feel better Jenners and rest assured that your blog is absolutely FABULOUS with or without your book giveaways!
Awww…thanks for your kind words. I was a bit paranoid that no one would want to read it without the giveaways!
Feel better soon, and happy blogiversary! I can totally relate to the economic thing — in fact I just blogged about it today and my starting to look for a part time job! I hope your job is going well.
It seems to be going around, doesn’t it? I was lucky enough to find a part-time job that worked with me still getting home in time to meet the schoolbus. I hope you find a job that works for you!
Oh poor poor you! I’ve been at home with the stomach flu. Hope you feel better soon!
Poor you right back! Seems like it is the time of year for everyone to feel poorly. Hope you feel better soon!
I hope you feel better soon! I’ve blogged way less this week than normal because of health issues. It seems like all sorts of viruses are on the loose right now. Which makes me thankful all I have is a sore throat, fever and a toothache (honestly – anything but the dreaded stomach virus my kids had over the weekend is better in my book).
I agree with the others – don’t feel bad about the giveaways! I’m sure everyone understands.
Ewww…the dreaded stomach virus. Yeah … I think I’d rather have a nasty cold than a stomach virus. that is awful! Hope you feel better soon too!
Congrats to the winners
Don’t feel bad about your giveaways, the economy is kicking everyones butt I think. I stopped my giveaways a while ago.
Feel better soon!!
Thanks … I feel better I’m not the only one stopping the giveaways out of my own pocket.
I’m sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling well — I hope you feel better soon! And I hear you about not being able to afford too many (or any) giveaways… Congrats to the winners of this one!
I’ll have to keep an eye out for publisher sponsored giveaways so it doesn’t come out of my pocket. : )
Sorry to hear you don’t feel so good – it’s extra hard when you’re the mom in charge of the whole freaking universe (as all moms are)! Nobody would ever quit reading your blog because you give up doing giveaways. We all read your blog because of the awesome content.
At least you are fortunate enough to live where there are part time jobs available. If you lived in crappy podunk like I do, you’d be just plain out of luck. No jobs to be had anywhere. You might enjoy the job more than you think. Please don’t give up your writing because I still want to be around long enough to read your first published book!
It is hard when you’re the mom and you’re sick …. but my Little One has been really really good to me. He wrote me a get better song and everything.
And I am lucky to live in a big enough place you can get a part-time job. I got it via Craigslist of all places!!!
I still can’t believe I won one of these wonderful books so thank you so very much once again. I am sorry you are feeling the effects of this continuing economic crunch and even more sorry to hear you are under the weather. It sounds like the wonderful bug my daughter brought home from preschool which I am just now finally, after two and a half weeks, recovering from. I did wonder where you had got to in the blogosphere but you need never apologize for not visiting. Get better soon.
I was so happy you were one of the winners. I think you’ll love this book.
And amazingly, all the moms around me are sick …. but none of the kids! What is up with that!
Boo, bad economy and colds! I’ve been hit by the Ague Fairy recently too and am FINALLY on the mend after three weeks of sinus infection, bronchitis, and a cold. I feel your pain…or well, I did. Feel better soon! Mental hug!
When you feel sick, it is hard to believe you ever felt good, if you know what I mean. It has been awhile since I’ve felt this bad so I had forgotten how miserable you can feel.
I am so sorry to hear things are tight in your household right now. We are having the same problem, and it’s getting really tough around here. I am also sorry to hear that you haven’t been feeling well. I hope that things get back to normal soon. And don’t worry, the internet will still be here waiting for you when you return!
Congratulations to all the winners!
It seems like everyone is having tough times right now. I thought we were supposed to be on an upswing but it doesn’t seem that way.
Ugh! Being sick is no fun at all…so whine away! And hope you feel better soon!!
I will … at least YOU guys in Blog World are more sympathetic than my family!
Ick, sorry about the cold and the economic situation both.
Yeah … they suck. At least the cold will go away soon.
Congratulations to the lucky winners
Sorry to hear about the economic uncertainties in your household. The economy is really sucking right now. Even we are feeling the impact of the US economic woes in Japan. Let’s hope that things will improve soon!
Oh and happy belated bloggiversary!
Yes … let’s hope it all improves soon.
Feel better soon! I know how colds can just be perfectly awful!
and yes, I agree with Natalie – this economy IS kicking everyone’s butt – no worries on the giveaways….take care of your family – blogging is definitely not a reliable source of extra income
Or any income … I don’t think I’ve made any money while blogging. I’m running in the red!
Yes, hard for everyone at the moment. To have a cold as well – you whine away.
It feels good to whine to a somewhat sympathetic audience. Mr. Jenners is like “it is just a cold.” I need to remind him what a baby he is when he gets sick.
I’m so sorry to hear that you haven’t been feeling well! It’s especially tough for a mom who has a little one to take care of. Don’t feel bad about the giveaways. It was extremely generous of you to offer them in the first place. This economy is rough, and you have to put your family first. I hope the job is going well for you.
You’re so sweet. And I have to tell you, the Little One has been so wonderful “taking care of me.” He wrote me a little “feel better soon” song that is so so cute.
Everyone is being affected by this economic thing. But I find it’s kind of fun being creative with my budget and grocery shopping. I am sad, however, that we haven’t gotten to hear from you lately. Although, very happy about your 2nd anniversary!
And it seems like everyone is also struggling from a cold/virus right now. I wonder if the two are connected? Maybe it’s a conspiracy?!? The economic downturn virus!
So, get well, we’ll be here waiting for you.
Yes … you are on to something! The economic downturn virus is sweeping the nation! It is funny though … only “women over 40″ are getting sick. None of our kids have gotten it … just moms, grandmoms and such.
So sorry you have a cold! I just got over one and it was not fun. But Happy Blogoversary anyway!!! May you have many, many more!!!
Wait … you just got over a cold and now I have one? Suspicious I think! Your comments must have carried germs!!!
Sorry to hear about your economic uncertainty. However, I’m glad to hear you were able to get a job. Hopefully things will get better soon.
I’m sure they will. I was lucky to even find a job I think!
feel better my friend. I’ll still visit even if you never give another item away.
Awww…you are so sweet. And I so have to read your post about parent-teacher conferences … I had mine this week.
Congrats to the winners, and congrats to the two year plus mark!
As far as the economy thing, there are lots in the same boat…I’ll slide over and save you a place!
We’ll eventually weather this storm and see the sunny shores ahead.
OMG, I’ve gone sappy.
You have gone sappy … how unlike you!! Thanks for saving my seat in the boat!
I hope you feel better soon and I hope the economy starts an upward swing ASAP. We’re feeling the crunch here, too.
It is hitting everywhere … and they keep saying things are getting better! Where? For whom?
Congrats to the winners!!
Sorry that you’re under the weather. A cold is never any fun. And I completely understand about the giveaway thing.
Hope everything improves for you soon!!
I’m sure it will. To quote Annie, “The sun will come out tomorrow/And I’ll stop having to use tissues by the dozen.” OK … I paraphrased a bit.
i hear you. i am having money issues too. I hope things turn around for you soon.
Thanks. I think it is pretty universal at this point. Anyone who isn’t having to tighten their belts is really lucky.
Congratulations on the blogging anniversary! I certainly understand about needing to cut the giveaways. I’ll keep reading your blog regardless
I hope you’re well again soon!
Awww..you are sweet. I told my husband “Well, when I stop the giveaways, there goes half my readership.” Glad to hear it won’t necessarily be true. : )
It is amazing how expensive sending out books can get. For awhile I was sending like six books a week between the blog, SwapTree, and BookMooch. I have now learned to cut back dramatically.
It was that or divorce.
Yeah … it does add up. And when we were looking for places to cut down, it was an easy target. Hey … $10.00 or so is $10.00! I had to “quit” Paperback Swap for awhile too. It is the library for me.
Yay! Thanks for hosting the October giveaways. I’m sorry you’re sick and budgeting like crazy. I just got over the worst cold two weeks ago that Will gave me and it sucked. On the positive side, with a part time job you should have some great material for coworker stories on the blog. Hope you feel better soon.
I was so happy when Random.org picked you as one of the winners!!! And did YOU give me this cold somehow???
Gawsh I hope not! If I gave you the cold I had it would be 14 lashes with a wet noodle. One for each day I had it
Hang in there….I’m sorry about having to return to the “working” world (as IF Mom’s ever left it!!) but I am glad that you found something and can help a bit. We don’t read your blog to win….we read it and THEN we win!! Take care of yourself and pamper yourself when you can. Oh, and sip on lots of chicken soup!
Get well soon!
Yes … I need my chicken soup!
I’m sorry things are causing you to have to tighten your belts and take a part time job. Do you at least like the job?
As jobs go, this is a good one.
I hope the economy and the cold start to cooperate with you soon! Congrats on the two years. I suspect that my one year anniversary will creep up and creep past without me noticing, too.
At your one year, you will probably notice it … but at 2 years, it will get all mixed up with everything else as blogging seems like “a thing you’ve always done.”
Congratulations to the winners! And this economy is kicking everyone in the butt, so I know how you feel! It’s got to go up sometime soon!!
I hope you are right. It has been hitting everyone we know … and now it is our turn.
