It sounds like Musashi is showing more of a three dimensional quality in his thinking and relationships as you go through each book. I love how your reviewing this series.

He is. He is really developing as a person … moving past just being a gifted swordsman. I think that was the point my dad was trying to tell me.

I just love the fact that you find notes by your dad.

It has been such a delight to find them. Definitely makes me feel closer to him.

Hooray! He’s finally getting it! Martial arts training is not about beating people up.

Exactly! It makes me wonder if he was one of the first to put this all together in this way. He did write a book, which I’m thinking I’m going to have to read after reading this book.

Wow! The infatuation between Samurais was indeed handled with a lot of dignity and respect! I had not thought that would be the case in a book like this, but am glad to hear that! This book gets more and more intriguing as the weeks go on and I learn more about it.

Wasn’t that interesting? I thought it was a pretty enlightened reaction.

Good to know there are seven books. I thought there were five. The Bear and I are still planning to read this. I think we’re working up the courage.

Wait until you see the book … then you might change your mind! HAHA.

Just reading your highlights is wonderful – I feel like I get to know both the story and characters in bite-size bits.

Glad this has been interesting to you. Sometimes I wonder if anyone really cares about these posts!

I’m behind in my reading again, so I’m hoping to catch up and then do a combined post for books five and six. That all depends on how busy things are here.

No worries … I barely got my own up.

It’s been forever since I stopped in to say hello. I really have to give Mangas a chance. This one looks really good.

This isn’t quite a manga (but I think there are ones that are based on the story). It is a 970-page novel that I’ve been working my way through with a few others since October.

I don’t know, I think I need an extension. and I will correct you I believe the book spans at least 5 years of Musashi’s life. But so much goes on and on that you think it’s longer. I’ll provide you with evidence. Pg. 542 in my book, “How many years?”
      “Not since Sekigahara”
      “That makes it…”
“Five years. It must be, I’m twenty-two now.” This was the conversation with Musashi and Matachaci. Then again, this particular book may be just covers 3 years. Has anybody kept a body count?

Good catch. The time is very fluid in this book. I think more time passed in this book than any other.

And the body count would be quite high … at least three digits by this point.

Great post. I really liked the more philosophical/spiritual tone of this book.

Sorry mine is so short this week but have a son in hospital (nothing serious, just time consuming) – I’ll do better next week hopefully.

Oh dear … I hope your son is OK. Hope your week gets better.

So how many years does this book span? (have you already told us that and I wasn’t paying attention?)

Well, it is just a portion of Musashi’s life from when he was a young man. I don’t think I mentioned it but this particular book covered about 3 years or so.
