As soon as I saw this meme, I knew I had to participate! Writing fake book blurbs—what could be more fun? (Well, a $1,000 shopping spree in a book store might be more fun but this is within my grasp.) Each week, Lisa from Writing in the Buff will post a new photo, which participants pretend is the cover of a fake book. We then write a 150-word blurb based on the photo that “is so enticing that potential readers would feel compelled to buy the book. ” Well, I’m not sure I’ve enticed you to buy this particular book, but I had a fun time trying.

Bed, Breakfast and Murder by Althea Foyle

When amateur sleuth Nigella Peabody decides she needs a break from the murder and mayhem that plague her little village of Hampstead-on-Heath, the Northbrook Inn seems like the perfect choice. But when Nigella arrives, the inn—and its proprietress, Angelica Marseilles—leave something to be desired. With drab, narrow hallways and crumbling exterior, the inn has seen better days. But Nigella’s plans to depart early are thwarted when Angelica is found slumped over the morning scones with a butter knife in her back. Never one to shy away from a spot of murder, Nigella decides to do some investigating. After all, her fellow houseguests—the pompous Colonel Mustard, the seductive Miss Scarlet, the addled Professor Plum, and dithering Mrs. White—seem to take Angelica’s murder as “business as usual.”

“The best Nigella Peabody mystery yet! Creates feelings of deja vu and a desire to play board games.”  --We Love Cozies Magazine

      Great blurb!!

    2. 03/27/2011 at 9:11 pm

Is it wrong that all I could think of was how hard it would be to stab someone with a butter knife hard enough to lodge it in their back? :) Wonderful blurb! I’m sure it says something about me that I always choose to be Miss Scarlet.

      • 03/28/2011 at 1:58 pm

I think you always wanting to be Miss Scarlet means you’re a red hot saucy vixen inside!

    3. 03/27/2011 at 5:38 pm

This is great Jenners! I love the review by We Love Cozies Magazine “Creates feelings of deja vu and a desire to play board games.” That’s awesome :)

      • 03/28/2011 at 1:58 pm

This was such a kick to write.

amazing and quite scary how many murders are committed in these small villages – makes me glad I live in a city.

      • 03/28/2011 at 1:57 pm

I know … the safest way to avoid murder is to live in a city! HAHA!

    5. 03/27/2011 at 1:28 am

This is hilarious! Don’t tell me it was Miss Scarlet in the dining room with a butter knife…

      • 03/27/2011 at 10:02 am

Nah. She doesn’t have the arm strength.

    6. 03/26/2011 at 9:48 pm

LOL!! You have quite a knack for blurb writing. You should look into a side business,

      • 03/27/2011 at 10:02 am

That would be such a sweet sweet job.

    7. 03/26/2011 at 4:58 pm

Oh, how funny! This looks like a fun meme! I might try it out.

      • 03/26/2011 at 9:48 pm

Oh it is tons of fun! Give it a whirl. I bet you’ll like it. She already has the photo for next week posted.

Oh that Colonel Mustard! He can never be trusted around the silverware. This is hysterical – I would buy this one in a heartbeat.

      • 03/26/2011 at 9:46 pm

I always knew he had it in him! You should try this one…it is fun!

    9. 03/26/2011 at 11:50 am

very cool jenners! I’d buy the book after reading your blurb.

      • 03/26/2011 at 9:45 pm

Now if ever actually write it, I will hold you to that.

    10. 03/26/2011 at 11:02 am

That’s awesome! I can totally see that being an actual book…even the title is perfect :-)

      • 03/26/2011 at 9:44 pm

This was so fun to write. And once you read enough books, these blurbs just come to you!

    11. 03/26/2011 at 11:02 am

It was Professor Plum in the conservatory with the lead pipe – No, wait, it was a butter knife in the breakfast room. Oh well.

Fabulously written. Very entertaining, and I’d definitely read it. Nice one.

      • 03/26/2011 at 9:44 pm

Don’t tell but it was Colonel Mustard in the dining room with the butter knife.

    12. 03/26/2011 at 10:51 am

I adore the name Angelica Marseilles! A great fun blurb.

      • 03/26/2011 at 9:42 pm

I think my favorite part was thinking up names!

When does it go on sale?? What a fun exercise.

      • 03/26/2011 at 9:27 am

As soon as I get around to writing it … so about the twelfth of never!

    14. 03/26/2011 at 12:22 am

You incorporated the cast of Clue? LOL! I love a good mystery, and this has all the trimmings…

      • 03/26/2011 at 8:02 am

I don’t quite know where the Clue cast came from but it gave me a chuckle when they popped in to my head.

    15. 03/25/2011 at 10:02 pm

Agatha Christie is smiling at you from Mystery Writers’ Heaven. This is delightful, and my Kindle is waiting for a download. Great job with BBF! I’m so glad you participated and that you like the meme. :)

      • 03/26/2011 at 8:01 am

This is just such a wonderfully fun meme. I just loved participating and will be back for more!

    16. 03/25/2011 at 8:00 pm

What a creative and fun meme!! You are hilarious, Jenners!!

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:50 pm

Isn’t that meme idea the best? I look forward to doing it again next week.

Oh, another nice mystery here. Good job.

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:50 pm

Thanks. It was fun to write.

    18. 03/25/2011 at 6:45 pm

What a fun meme!!!! You did a great job with it, too. I would be terrible at it, so I won’t even try. I look forward to seeing more of these!

Oh…enjoyed your little chocolate/dieting rant over at Tracy’s, too.
      :)

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:49 pm

I’m so excited about this meme. I think it will be tons of fun. And you saw my little rant, huh?

    19. 03/25/2011 at 4:39 pm

I laughed aloud att he butter knife, you got me with that image. I’d buy the book!

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:49 pm

Sold! Now I guess I just have to write it. : )

    20. 03/25/2011 at 2:53 pm

Aw, the days of Clue! You’ve succeeded in making me want to read it!

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:48 pm

It was so funny how that game came right back to me.

    21. 03/25/2011 at 2:30 pm

I think it was Mr. Green – I think he was beefy enough to kill with a bread knife. And I bet when they search his room, they’ll find a candlestick, rope, lead pipe, wrench and revolver.

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:47 pm

I guess my book might be a little predictable after all!

    22. 03/25/2011 at 2:29 pm

Ha! Perfect. A butter knife, wow, that wouldn’t go in so easy. Ouch!

This is like “Murder, She Wrote”, where wherever she goes, someone gets murdered. Oh well, c’est la vie. Or le mort, as the case may be!

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:47 pm

The butter knife is an obvious clue…the murderer must be strong or trained in the killing arts.

    23. 03/25/2011 at 1:09 pm

‘a butter knife in her back’ – hilarious!

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:46 pm

        Thanks for stopping by.

    24. 03/25/2011 at 12:37 pm

I think you should make a career of this.

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:45 pm

Wouldn’t that be the best career ever!? I wish I could.

    25. 03/25/2011 at 12:05 pm

It’s the Disney Haunted Mansion Clue. I haven’t opened it yet, but I figured my kids would enjoy it with the Disney characters. I guess the mystery is who was haunted in which room rather than a murder.

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:44 pm

        I will look into that!

    26. 03/25/2011 at 11:41 am

I think it would take a bit of brawn to plunge a butter knife in someone’s back…need to take a closer look at Mustard. Plum is way too pale and skinny to do any damage.

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:53 pm

You are quite right…the butter knife points to a murderer with great arm strength. Looks like the Mustard might be in a jam!

    27. 03/25/2011 at 11:28 am

“We Love Cozies” magazine? Even that last little bit had me chuckling.

Colonel Mustard…I think I’ve run into him before. (Just kidding.) It’s amazing how many writers saw a mystery or something to do with “another dimension” in this photo. I’ve love to read this book, and I don’t even usually like murder mysteries…

      • 03/25/2011 at 8:51 pm

It was fun seeing how everyone interpreted the photo…and even with similar ideas, everyone tookmit in a different direction.

    28. 03/25/2011 at 10:54 am

I love how you gave yourself a credit from “We Love Cozies Magazine” and of course, nice job on the blurb! And this is a fun challenge!

      • 03/25/2011 at 12:01 pm

I’m so excited to have found this meme. It was a ton of fun. And I love seeing how everyone had such different approaches.

Definitely one to add to my Amazon wish list – and the review at the end an inspirational idea which I shall certainly pinch whenever I have some spare words.
And the other characters, especially Prof. Plum, need getting to know better.

      • 03/25/2011 at 12:00 pm

Nothing more fun than writing fake reviews for fake blurbs of fake books!

    30. 03/25/2011 at 10:17 am

oh I loved Cluedo when I was a kid! I love mystery books, I’d read this just to see if Mrs Peacock and Mr Green turn up too!

      • 03/25/2011 at 11:59 am

It can’t believe I forgot Miss Peacock! (Of course, she would have to make an appearance in the book.)

    31. 03/25/2011 at 10:08 am

A butter knife in the back — that must have been a strong murderer (though I think you could kill someone with a ballpoint pen if you knew what you were doing. At least that’s what movies have led me to believe.) And thank you for the Clue references, I really needed a good laugh this morning. I always choose Professor Plum when I play, or Miss Peacock.

      • 03/25/2011 at 11:59 am

Oh … how did I forget Miss Peacock!!!! And you have a point … the murder weapon obviously points to a man with great strength … like Colonel Mustard!

    32. 03/25/2011 at 10:07 am

I love this! The fact that it was a butter knife in her back cracked me up. I would read that book–especially with the Clue characters.

I played that game all the time growing up. I have a new one still in the wrapping waiting for my kids to be old enough to play it. Awww the memories.

      • 03/25/2011 at 11:58 am

There is a new Clue? I didn’t know that. I would love to check that out. Not sure my Little One is quite ready for it but someday…

      I love it!!

    34. 03/25/2011 at 10:01 am

You are so wonderfully hilarious. I would most definitely read this book! Well, as long as Colonel Mustard didn’t do it. That poor sop always gets stuck with the blame. And we all know that it’s really Miss Scarlet who’s the murderous tramp; I mean look at her name!

      • 03/25/2011 at 11:58 am

Oh yes … Miss Scarlet is the first one I look to whenever someone is murdered!
