Each week, Lisa from Writing in the Buff posts a new photo, which participants pretend is the cover of a fake book. We then write a 150-word blurb for the book. Once again, I find myself inspired to write a non-fiction book. Non-fiction, I can’t quit you!

Sweat Equity’s DIY Guide to Cheap and Naturalistic Backyard Pools

Sweat Equity’s popular series of do-it-yourself guides taught you how to build a tree house with nothing but a stapler and a peach pit and provided instruction on building a deck using toothpicks and glue. Now, in its most ambitious guide to date, you’ll find yourself building a naturalistic backyard pool on the cheap—using only a teaspoon and a lock pick. You’ll learn how to save thousands on excavation using a common teaspoon. Plus, our detailed instructions on how to pick a lock at a quarry will save you from having to purchase expensive materials for creating naturalistic water features. In just 14 short years, you’ll have the pool of your dreams and pay a fraction of the price. If you thought having your own pool was a pipe dream beyond your financial means, Sweat Equity says “Not if you do it yourself with cheap tools.™”

a stapler and a peach pit?? Now that sounds like an Amazing Race task!!! LOL.

      • 05/11/2011 at 8:12 pm

What did you think of the finale of Amazing Race? I was kind of rooting for Mallory and Gary. Was SHOCKED that Kisha and Jen won … I couldn’t believe it. But I was touched by them wanting to help out their mom.

Ah Jenners – how I have missed your wonderful sense of humor! I am slowly getting back into my groove, and I very much look forward to reading your blog with regularity :)

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement during my recent hiatus. Please know that I have consistently been thinking about you and praying for you family during this difficult time.

      • 05/11/2011 at 8:15 am

And know that I have been thinking of you as you make some rather big transitions in life — some sad and some happy. I hope you enjoy the process of getting back into your groove … and find some new areas to play in.

Lol! I wondered what the lock pick was going to be for. I bet my kids would enjoy digging this for me. And hey-child labor is totally cheap.

      • 05/09/2011 at 9:10 pm

Oh yes … the benefits of child labor! This book would definitely feature that as a cost-saving benefit.

    4. 05/09/2011 at 3:08 pm

Hi Jenners, Glad to be back visiting you. A stapler and peach pit
/ toothpicks andsuperglue? Sounds like my idea of DIY made easy.

      • 05/09/2011 at 5:38 pm

Glad to see you back in the swing of blogging and feeling better!

    5. 05/09/2011 at 9:38 am

That’s is so hilarious! I have never heard of this Friday meme before but that is up my alley….. :)

      • 05/09/2011 at 1:51 pm

It is a really fun meme, and I think it is rather new. Join in … I’ve been having a lot of fun with it.

    6. 05/08/2011 at 10:47 pm

What? Did I say that? I meant to say we borrowed peacocks from a party. There’s no fine for that is there?

    7. 05/08/2011 at 9:56 pm

I would totally buy that book. If only to find out how to pick a lock.

      • 05/09/2011 at 1:51 pm

That knowledge would come in handy for much more than building a naturalistic swimming pool.

Sounds like some of the things McGyver used to build “stuff”. I swear he built an airplane out of a hershey bar and a paperclip or something like that. Anyhow, another fun post by Jenners, Mom extraordinaire!

      • 05/08/2011 at 7:55 pm

It is very McGyveresque! And if I flew in a plane made of a Hershey bar, I would probably crash from eating too much of the wings!

    9. 05/08/2011 at 9:06 am

Just 14 short years?! Sounds ideal.
      Happy Mother’s Day!!!

      • 05/08/2011 at 9:48 am

Of course, the timeframe is exended if you live in a climate where the ground is frozen during the winter months. Then it is more like 25 years. : )

Happy Mother’s Day to you as well.

    10. 05/07/2011 at 10:37 pm

We’ve used that borrowing rocks from a quarry tip. Maybe I could have written this book!

      • 05/08/2011 at 9:47 am

how interesting! According to one of the other commenters, this could result in a $5000 fine.

    11. 05/07/2011 at 9:22 pm

I love the idea of helping myself to the materials at the quarry. I guess I can wait for 14 years—as I sweat and toil—to get this marvelous feature as part of my yard.
      (very clever!)

      • 05/07/2011 at 10:01 pm

Only 14 years of hard labor and risking arrest and you can kick back in your cool new pool. A bargain!

    12. 05/07/2011 at 12:05 pm

Your blurbs are always so funny!

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:10 pm

Thanks! I do my best to amuse.

    13. 05/07/2011 at 11:32 am

Heh. 14 years and a teaspoon sounds reasonable to me! I love it when you do these features. I also want to learn how to build a tree house with a stapler and a peach pit!

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:10 pm

Well, the first step to get your cheap lumber is the plant the peach pit and watch it grow. Then cut it down for the treehouse wood but then use another peach pit to build the tree to put the treehouse in. It is a very long process actually … but cheap!

    14. 05/07/2011 at 9:20 am

14 years! That made me laugh! A fun take on the meme.

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:09 pm

I’m always surprised what my mind comes up with for these book blurbs.

    15. 05/07/2011 at 9:09 am

This is too funny! I love the name Sweat Equity. As one with a gravel pit though, if you are going to sneak in, make sure that you wear your hard hat, because if MSHA catches you down there without one, you will receive a hefty fine ($5,000+).

I’ll buy a copy of your book for sure, but i’m not certain I’d sit out on that deck for very long! Have a wonderful day.

      Kathy M.

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:09 pm

Hmmm…you seem to know an awful lot about quarry sneaking. Makes me wonder about your background and whether you’ve had experience in it! ; )

      05/07/2011 at 8:42 am

Too funny!! Even with proper tools DIY can take 14 years.

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:08 pm

I hear you! We have yet to do a DIY project that went as smoothly or as quickly as the ones they show on TV.

    17. 05/07/2011 at 8:11 am

oh boy I love this! Now I just gotta go find myself a backyard so I can have 14 years of fun with my teaspoon and lock pick!

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:07 pm

Well, if you just have a small area, perhaps you can knock it off in a mere 10 years.

    18. 05/07/2011 at 7:11 am

This is excellent and very alluring;-)

    19. 05/07/2011 at 4:39 am

I love it. Sweat Equity, and building a pool using a teaspoon, and I laughed out loud at the section on picking a lock at the quarry. Great fun!

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:06 pm

The skills you learn from the series can be put to good use elsewhere as well. Perhaps the next book will build on the lock picking and be “Increased Financial Security Through Robbery.”

    20. 05/07/2011 at 12:14 am

Whew – good thing I am terrified of having a pool while the kids are young. In fourteen short years they will be old enough to have it unfenced.

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:05 pm

        Yet another advantage!!!

    21. 05/06/2011 at 11:58 pm

Only 14 years!?!? How do they teach you to build so quickly…..

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:05 pm

Well, it isn’t a very LARGE pool..

      Jenners,
This has to be one of the most original blurbs I have ever read…totally fun! A backyard pool with just a teaspoon and a lock pick? I loved it!

      ~Jean

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:05 pm

Thanks. It was fun imagining these insane projects. : )

    23. 05/06/2011 at 11:23 pm

      I loved this!

Perhaps Sweat Equity could come out with a Self-Help line of books, like Guilt without Sex or How to be Perfectly Miserable: The Definitive Guide.

      You rock (pun intended)!

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:04 pm

You crack me up! Guilt Without Sex — I didn’t know that was possible.

    24. 05/06/2011 at 11:04 pm

I loved the “just 14 short years” – he he he, what a great do it yourself book!

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:04 pm

I suspect that it is more on target with real DIY projects than the ones they show on TV. I know our projects never proceed smoothly or quickly.

    25. 05/06/2011 at 10:42 pm

      I think Mr. J may own that book . . .

    26. 05/06/2011 at 10:04 pm

Considering we just filled in our swimming pool last year, I don’t think my husband would be pleased to see me in the back yard digging a new one… even with a teaspoon!

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:03 pm

I would think not!!! Sigh … I mourn the death of a swimming pool.

    27. 05/06/2011 at 9:55 pm

The “fourteen short years” is what got me. Not only is this book a must read, but the author is obviously a positive thinking guru who deserves his own talk show. LOL Great blurb! Very funny. Thanks so much for adding your talent to BBF!

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:02 pm

It would be fun to see this guy’s talk show. Each episode would take years to complete.

    28. 05/06/2011 at 9:51 pm

This is wonderful, you take humor and silliness (to use your word) to new heights with no sweat at all. I love it.

Silliness is my specialty. Try as I might, I just cannot do serious for these things.

    29. 05/06/2011 at 9:47 pm

Just 14 short years…LOL! And a peach pit? Where do you get your ideas? Very fun this week!

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:12 pm

Well, the peach pit is to get the lumber for the treehouse. Then you plant ANOTHER peach pit from the tree that you grew to get the lumber for the treehouse to be in. : )

    30. 05/06/2011 at 9:35 pm

We dug a pond with a trowel, just a little bigger than a teaspoon.

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:02 pm

Well here I thought I was being silly and outrageous and now I find out I’m not (unless you are!!).

    31. 05/06/2011 at 9:12 pm

A teaspoon to dig a pool? That sounds like a sadistic form of torture to me! LOL

      • 05/07/2011 at 7:01 pm

Oh … did I forget to list the author? Sisyphus!
