What Is Green, Slow and Almost Went In My Hair?

This guy!
We were sitting outside on our deck visiting with our neighbors when both Mr. Jenners and my neighbor got a weird look on their face and said, with some urgency, “Get out of the chair now. There is a weird bug by your head!!” I bolted out of the chair and just about had a heart attack when I realized this creature was just a few inches from my hair!!!
We Googled it and found out that it is indeed a Leaf Bug (which is unsurprising) and is usually found in Australia and Southeast Asia. What it is doing in a backyard in New Jersey is anyone’s guess.
Isn’t it weird that this is my SECOND “What is green…” post within a week? It makes me wonder what other green thing is going to come into my life soon. Perhaps I’ll be writing a “What’s Green, From Outer Space and Abducted Me Last Night?” post next week.

Well at least it was kind of Mr. Jenners and your neighbor to warn you of the impending dangers before it actually FLEW onto your head
A quick escape is always better than flailing about trying to get a bug off you!
Yes … I suppose I should be thankful they didn’t decide to let it go in my hair and see what kind of reaction I would have!
I’d have to agree with June Freakin Cleaver and say it’s a katydid.
You probably wouldn’t have liked the Children’s Museum exhibit I took Emmy to today…she got to touch some worms!
Ewwww….worms!!! I have a “thing” about worms. My brothers threw a worm ball at me when I was younger and I’ve been freaked out by them ever since. Thanks for reminding me to look up Katydid.
Oooo – he is really cool. We had a huge mantis in our garage the other day. I know those freak you out. It seems this does, too.
I’m more freaked by the praying mantises than this guy … but not by much. The triangle heads and the way they move on the mantis is what gives me the creeps.
Great pictures. That bug would totally freak me out, it looks so much like a leaf. I feel like I saw bug wars, and he was a pretty fierce competitor.
If that bug had been in a tree, I would have never seen him. It always amazes me when animals blend into their environment.
Yes the bug is pretty, but if that thing caught me by surprise I would have killed it, which is sad. But it is definitely worth the admiration. Aliens would be very exciting, would love to read about a post about your encounter next time.
Okay, I thought that was a cicada….I actually just took a picture of something very similar at our family reunion in Indiana. I will have to take a closer look and compare them! At least you family saved you….mine probably would have just sat there and let it get onto my head just to see what would happen!!!
I’ve seen cicada shells (totally gross) and they look a bit different from this thing.
GAH! LOL
Exactly!!
That leaf bug is kind of pretty, but I wouldn’t want it in my hair, either.
It is kind of pretty … and interesting … but from a distance.
lol jenners! thats a nasty bug
Seems like it should be in a zoo or something … not near me!
How very funny. I become such a girl when bugs fly near me or on me. Atleast it’s green. I hate brown or black bugs. Eeek.
Me too! I start freaking out and screaming. It is quite sad actually.
Well, you know the old saying about things happening in threes. Be on the look out for one more scary green thing to occur! That thing really does look like a leaf.
He really does look like a leaf … with the veins of a leaf and everything. I’m hoping my next green thing is cash though … not something scary!
Ewww! Glad it didn’t get you. Love the pictures though.
I’m glad it didn’t get me too. I kept an eye on it the whole time we were outside.
Ok hate those things, but aren’t they good luck?? of maybe that is lady bugs?? WHo Cares right!
Right … who cares! I’m taking it to mean that I’m going to have good luck.
The bug is kind of cool (since it’s not in MY hair — though we have plenty of nasty bugs here in Texas) — anyhow, I have to thank you for the best laugh I’ve had all day — there was a link at the bottom of your post to your Hunger Games/Anne of Green Gables mashup, which I somehow missed when it was first posting. I almost spit out my drink, I was laughing so hard! I’ve been listening to an audiobook of AGG so the timing was perfect. Thanks!
I was wondering how the bug post got you laughing!! How funny that you are reading A of GG and ran across that post. I suppose it came up because of the word green!!!
I had no idea those weren’t native to our part of the world – I’ve seen them down my way. Pretty neat looking, but NOT in one’s hair!! *shudder* We’ve had a wasp problem lately and one DID get into my hair in the kitchen the other night. I screamed like a little girl!!
It is very possible that I misidentified the bug … and not everything you read on the Internet is true!! Maybe they are common to the U.S.
Cool macro shots, Jenners! I love his little face. That is one cool bug.
Enjoy the day!

He was interesting to look at … but from a computer screen, not in person.
Gives me freaking chills ! Other day a spider run across my desk when i was reading a blog post at 3 AM ! Imagine THAT !
That was the spider saying “go to bed already!”
LOL! I have this huge fear of bugs in my hair, especially beetles. It’s because I have long, thick hair and when a beetle gets in there (yep, it’s happened before) their little thorny legs wrap in my hair and they struggle trying to get out and I’m freaking while it gets more tangled and it’s freaking – it’s not a good situation.
I’m amazed you kept your long hair after having that little beetle incident!
That is so cool! (But not that you almost had it in your hair though.) I’ve always wanted to see one of those and thought they weren’t local to the US. Strange that he’s so far from home.
It makes me wonder why he is there … and if someone near us traveled somewhere recently and brought home a little visitor.
I also would have probably freaked out had I saw that close to my head! I don’t really appreciate bugs all that much.
I think very few people fully appreciate bugs.
Awww… he looks very studious. Probably wanted to see what you were reading. Gosh, he’s huge though!
He is huge … for a bug! How can he read with those beady little almost no eyeball eyeballs??
LOL! I’m sure he was more scared of you than you of him!
I don’t know if that is true. He seemed pretty calm!
Yeah, I wouldn’t want that thing anywhere near me either! It does look exactly like a leaf too. That’s crazy!
It even has veins like a leaf does. If it wasn’t on the chair and was in a tree, I would have never noticed it.
I was going to say Katydid too — freaky but harmless.
I’ll have to look up Katydid and check it out.
oh, he is cute! no need to be troubled!
Well if you think he is so cute, I’ll send him down your way!
Whoops, your hair even. See, even the thought of it has me a quivering mess.
Just as well it only nearly went in your head (shudders).
The look on Mr. Jenner’s face frightened me so much before I even saw the bug.
As long as it doesn’t bite, sting, or cause a rash, I’d say you’re safe.
Cool pics!
I don’t really want to find out if it does any of those things.
Love the expression on your face! I would have been right there with you, shrieking and jumping and maybe evening peeing my pants. We are immersed in flying cock roaches down here, so I understand. Next green adventure? Boogers? Emeralds? Cash? I’m excited to find out.
Flying cockroaches? Well, that squashes my plans to move to Florida! And emeralds and cash would be a lovely!
A very cool bug when NOT in your hair
Exactly!
Wow!!! At first I was thinking “what a cool bug! ” and then I saw his face/eyes and I was creeeeeeeeped out! What in the world? I hope that it stays in YOUR corner of NJ thank you!
Love that last one!
What … you don’t want this guy coming up to pay you a visit????
Oh man, these are great shots! We found a giant leopard moth caterpillar last week but this is way cooler.
Hmmmm…your find sounds really weird and freaky.
I can’t believe you! a mother of a “little one” and not immune to green things. I myself have had many such pets and in my hair that would have made me a “cool” mom. Get with the flow lady.
Sissy, at least it wasn’t green, cold and slimey.
Wait… maybe that one is next!

Bunny Jean’s Decor and More! (my Main blog)
(the Bunny Hop linky is open starting Tuesday night)
You have a point … but I don’t like your prediction for the future.
I’ve not mastered the art of being cool about icky things yet. When the Little One was catching tiny frogs, I had to work really hard not to freak out.
He’s so big! And very cool looking. Unless he is anywhere near your head
Wait, what am I talking about? I think I need to put down the wine.
Put that wine down now!!! He is cool looking but from a distance!
I do not like bugs, but what I like even less than bugs is bugs in my hair!!
True that!
That kind of looks like a katydid.
The first green thing I thought was was a booger…let’s hope for the cash.
Yes … let’s hope for cash and not boogers!
It’s kind of pretty, especially in that first picture. I like Kathy’s idea of buying lottery tickets to attract some green
I like Kathy’s idea about the next green thing in my life too! I hope she is right!
Aww, he just wanted to say hi!
Well, he can say hi from a distance as far as I’m concerned.
That is one fascinating-looking little bug! I think I’d get freaked out if it was suddenly in my hair though.
It wasn’t all that little in my opinion!!
Hey, maybe the next green thing to come into your life will be money! Have you bought any lottery tickets lately?
Oh what a great green thing that would be!!! I hope you are right!
