• What Is Green, Tiny, Fast and Eating All My Sugar?

    by  • 08/08/2011 • Cool Photos • 76 Comments

These guys! (All photos courtesy of Mr. Jenners.)

Our view out the kitchen window every day.

This is my current desktop background.

They are so fast and difficult to capture clearly.

Hide and seek. Can you find the hummingbird?

Mr J must be fast also – those hummers fly away like the speed of light. Gorgeous pics!

Lovely pictures! Mr. Jenners can add nature photographer to his resume. Thanks for sharing!

      • 08/14/2011 at 10:03 pm

He would love to be a professional photographer. It is one of his few hobbies/

    4. 08/11/2011 at 8:47 pm

Awww..my Mom loves to feed hummingbirds and when they are on vacation I have to go over to their condo and change the feeder out :) They are such beautiful birds!

      • 08/12/2011 at 9:01 pm

They are so special aren’t they?

    5. 08/11/2011 at 8:40 pm

My family is obsessed with hummingbirds! If you don’t believe me – when you get a chance, go check on my sister’s blog page (she doesn’t blog too much)….but this one is not to be missed if you are a hummingbird person!
Here is the link….just in case you have time…it is worth it!

Oh … thanks for the link! I love hummingbirds and I’m anxious to see what your sister has done.

    6. 08/10/2011 at 10:39 pm

Great pics courtesy Mr. Jenners! But, please explain — bats at night? Do they come to the feeders, too, or are they predators of the hummingbirds (animal behavior = not my strong suit today!).

And, I’m cracking up about Rhapsody the feeder faker!

      • 08/11/2011 at 4:46 pm

I don’t know about the bats … I hope they don’t eat hummingbirds!!!! ACK!
And how awful that Jill is FAKING FEEDING HUMMIES!!!????!!!!

      • 08/11/2011 at 4:47 pm

Not sure about the bats … but I do know that Jill FAKING FEEDING HUMMIES IS WRONG!!!

    7. 08/10/2011 at 10:29 pm

They’re great! I don’t get many in my yard. :( Mr Jenners got some great shots!

      • 08/11/2011 at 4:46 pm

I was quite impressed. I guess the new camera he kept badgering me for was worthwhile!

    8. 08/10/2011 at 1:39 am

beautiful! and so much better than what I was imagining

I’m thinking of putting in a hummingbird/butterfly garden, I’m only at the research stage.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:23 am

I thought about doing the butterfly/hummingbird garden (we have a butterfly bush), but I didn’t like how so many of the plants looked!!! So we opted for the feeders. Good luck with it!

        • 08/10/2011 at 2:21 pm

that’s a very good reason not to plant something!

    9. 08/10/2011 at 12:04 am

Awesome photos. Mr. Jenners did a great job of capturing them. Every year my mom tries to attract them but some years, like this one, they are too busy to stop by.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:22 am

We are now an established stop for them. It can take some time to attract them but it is worth it.

    10. 08/09/2011 at 9:51 pm

Those pictures are awesome! It would be hard to capture a humming bird.

    11. 08/09/2011 at 2:53 pm

      wow, that’s a great view :)

    12. 08/09/2011 at 1:53 pm

That’s gorgeous! I’ve always been fascinated by hummingbird. They’re amazing creatures.

    13. 08/09/2011 at 1:36 pm

Mr. Jenners must have an awesome camera! Those are great photos…I love hummingbirds!

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:21 am

Mr. Jenners DOES have an awesome camera … after a relentless campaign to “upgrade” his old camera. I think these shots were his way of justifying the purchase!

    14. 08/09/2011 at 1:31 pm

I love hummingbirds. And I love that where we live, we get to see them quite a bit. Lovely pics.

    15. 08/09/2011 at 1:30 pm

      I adore hummingbirds! Wonderful photos!

    16. 08/09/2011 at 12:48 pm

Those are impressive photos! I’ve wanted to put out birdfeeders, but haven’t wanted the work of keeping them constantly full and clean. :) I remember my grandmother faithfully refilling and cleaning out her hummingbird feeder quite often.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:20 am

Usually I only have to fill them up about once a week. But these past few weeks, traffic has been very high and I’ve had to refill them every few days. Still, it is worth it and they are only here from May through September.

      Gorgeous! Just gorgeous.

    18. 08/09/2011 at 11:16 am

These are great photos, and those little guys are so adorable! I love hummingbirds, but we hardly ever see any in our neighborhood. Enjoy them!

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:27 am

I thought you would be swamped with hummies down your way! Isn’t that their winter playground?

    19. 08/09/2011 at 11:10 am

I adore them! I was getting a few visitors regularly, but now that our mimosa trees have stopped blooming, they’re here all the time. :) Great photos, Mr. Jenners!

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:26 am

We’ve been swamped the past few weeks so I wonder what stopped blooming here!?

    20. 08/09/2011 at 10:59 am

Awww, he’s so cute! I’ve never actually seen one except in photos. Thanks for sharing.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:26 am

I hope you get to see one in person someday. They are really amazing little creatures.

    21. 08/09/2011 at 10:54 am

My dad loved to watch hummingbirds while sitting in their sunroom. Now that he’s gone, I think of him every time I see a hummingbird. One somehow found his way into our garage yesterday and didn’t know how to get out. We were trying to help him get out but he nearly wore himself out before he finally figured it out.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:25 am

Aww…what a lovely way to remember your dad!
And we had a hummie fly into our garage last summer too!!! It took forever to help him get out. I was worried he was going to exhaust himself and die!

    22. 08/09/2011 at 9:44 am

Fab photos! We have hummingbirds too, and we even have feeders, but after seeing how much ants like feeders, I gave up on them, and just planted some hummingbird-attracting-plants. I still have the feeders out though, so it looks like I use them – heh.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:24 am

        You hummingbird feeder faker!!!!!!

    23. 08/09/2011 at 9:34 am

I saw a BIG hummingbird display at the hardware store yesterday…guess I should have bought a feeder and joined the fun!

    24. 08/09/2011 at 9:25 am

I really thought you were talking about The Little One. I know he’s not green, but then again, maybe he is because he is sick from all the sugar. Anyway. I love these little sweeties. My mom has them all around her house in IN. Your hubby takes some great pictures.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:24 am

I was wondering what people might think this post was about!! : )

    25. 08/09/2011 at 7:33 am

We love to watch hummingbirds, especially when they’re feeding. They’re so hard to capture with a camera, but you did a great job!

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:23 am

I am contractually obligated to point out the it was Mr. Jenners (not me) who took the photos.

    26. 08/09/2011 at 7:23 am

Way to go, Mr. Jenners! Those are some pretty cool photos of the hummingbird :) Of course, these tiny birds are cool to watch when they are outdoors. Not so cool when they accidentally fly in through the front door and then proceed to freak out because they can’t find their way back out.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:19 am

Awwww! We had a hummingbird fly into our garage last year and he was so panicked. It took forever to help him get out.

    27. 08/09/2011 at 6:41 am

so cool! Excellent photos! I would give them all the sugar they want!- aww!

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:18 am

I am on my second 5-pound bag of sugar this summer!!!!

    28. 08/09/2011 at 5:11 am

Hi Jenner, you got a terrific shots! I love all the photos of this cute little hummingbirds. Thank you for sharing these photos.

    29. 08/09/2011 at 4:55 am

Well done Mr Jenners on some qonderful pictures – it took me a good 5 minutes to find the bird in that last photo.

    30. 08/09/2011 at 3:50 am

Amazing photos! I could sit and watch hummingbirds all day!

    31. 08/09/2011 at 2:30 am

Wow, beautiful pics, Mr. Jenners! I love hummingbirds. Thanks for sharing these!

    32. 08/09/2011 at 1:56 am

Hahaha for some reason I had a very different image of what could be green, tiny, fast and eating all of your sugar like a little gremlin or something…

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:18 am

Ha ha! I imagine that most people clicked over to figure out what the heck I was talking about!

    33. 08/09/2011 at 1:42 am

You know how much we like hummers around here. Great, great photos, Mr. Jenners. So glad you shared.

I saw a post somewhere recently of a mama hummingbird feeding her baby. That was cool. If I find it again I’ll send it your way.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:17 am

I totally meant to link to your hummingbird post and then spaced it out!!! Darn!! I can’t imagine how tiny a baby hummingbird would be!

    34. 08/09/2011 at 1:36 am

      Wow, that is so amazing!

    35. 08/09/2011 at 1:25 am

Wow wow wow – so beautiful! Your desktop picture is gorgeous!

    36. 08/09/2011 at 12:10 am

      Awesome photographs! That’s so wonderful

    37. 08/08/2011 at 11:55 pm

Don’t you just love hummingbirds? I have this artsy fartsy fancy shmancy feeder that my hummingbirds ignore. The sugar solutions just dribbles to the ground every time the wind blows.

Kudos to Mr. Jenners on the great shots.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:17 am

I guess the cheap plastic feeders are best!

    38. 08/08/2011 at 11:25 pm

Wow! Cool pics, Jenners. It’s fun to watch the hummers!

    39. 08/08/2011 at 11:21 pm

These are so adorable. I’ve been taking bird photos this week too, and hope to post them next weekend. Love those hummers.

    40. 08/08/2011 at 11:11 pm

I love these photos and have to get a new camera so I can get similar shots! My favorite thing about hummers is the sound they make. Sometimes I step out the door to my patio and know there is one around because of the whirrrring I hear:)

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:16 am

One of my favorite things to do is stand a few feet from the feeder and wait for them to come up. I love the sound when they are right behind me … it is such an amazing thing. Their chirping is adorable too.

    41. 08/08/2011 at 11:01 pm

I don’t know if it’s the hot weather we’ve had or what, but I’ve seen more hummingbirds and butterflies this summer. And we had a possum on our deck a couple of nights in a row – he lives under our shed. No wonder the cat wants to escape – wildlife!

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:15 am

The past few weeks, we’ve had more hummingbirds than I’ve ever seen before. There are like 8 or 9 at any given time fighting each other to eat … and I have four different feeders to accommodate them.

    42. 08/08/2011 at 10:35 pm

These pictures are awesome, but don’t tell Mr Jenners. It will just go to his head.

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:14 am

You got it … it will go to this head. Too bad he is obsessively checking the comments to see the reactions to his photos!

    43. 08/08/2011 at 10:34 pm

      Wow, those are fantastic pictures!

    44. 08/08/2011 at 10:12 pm

      Those pictures are gorgeous!

    45. 08/08/2011 at 10:09 pm

Mr Jenners is quite the photographer. These are wonderful!!

I found the hidden hummingbird. :)

    46. 08/08/2011 at 9:53 pm

Wow! Fab pics – I love them!

    47. 08/08/2011 at 9:11 pm

catch one for me!! what a cutie pie and fast, too! we get bats around my house. what does that say about me?

      • 08/10/2011 at 8:13 am

You really should put out some feeders so you have hummies in the day and bats at night.
