It is time once again for the R.I.P (Readers Imbibing Peril) Challenge (September 1 – October 31). Devoted to all books (and movies and short stories) classified as: Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror or Supernatural. In other words, books that fit autumn’s somber and scary moods!

But mostly it is about having fun. The challenge is very low pressure, and you’ll find that you’re in good company as this is an immensely popular challenge among the book blogging community. I had such fun with it last year, that I’m joining in again.

I’ll be doing Peril the First (which involves reading four books). Here is the list of books I’m going to choose my R.I.P reads from:

    • Faithful Place by Tana French
    • The Most Dangerous Thing by Laura Lippman
    • The Redbreast by Jo Nesbo
    • Mop Men by Alan Emmins
    • Blacklands by Belinda Bauer
    • The Giver by Lois Lowry
    • The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff

I’m looking forward to hearing all about your reads!

    3. 09/11/2011 at 2:47 am

I have yet to start the Tana French series even though I own the first two books already. Well, it won’t be this season anyway since I’m busy torturing myself with a ridiculous novel from 1794 right now! Oh the fainting!

      Enjoy the challenge! :)

      • 09/13/2011 at 8:10 pm

A rare chance for us to have similar reads and you’re passing it by!!! I suspect you’ll love Tana French once you get into her. I think she is brilliant.

    4. 09/10/2011 at 11:35 pm

I’m in. Now I just need to decide what to read!

    5. 09/10/2011 at 12:22 pm

I love this challenge :) Happy reading!

    6. 09/09/2011 at 2:55 am

Have you read any Jo Nesbo? What made you choose Redbreast? I’m thinking of downloading The Snowman and am just wondering which book I should start off with… Any tips?

      • 09/09/2011 at 1:22 pm

I have not read any Jo Nesbo yet, but I’ve been hearing such good things about him that I felt I ought to try. As far as I could tell, The Redbreast is the first in the Harry Hole series that has been translated into English so I’d figure I’d start from the beginning. I’m not sure if it is best to read them in order but I decided to try to read them that way as far as what is available.

This is a great challenge for Halloween season. Sounds like fun, I would join if I weren’t so busy and backed up with books. I like gothic and suspense. Hadn’t read a thriller in awhile. Can’t wait to read about the reviews.

      • 09/07/2011 at 8:00 pm

It is a really fun and low pressure challenge. Even with your commitments, you could participate by reading some short stories (Poe????) or watching a movie. It is great seasonal fun. Good luck getting rid of the backlog!

    8. 09/07/2011 at 5:36 pm

The Giver is a really good book! Enjoy your reading!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:59 pm

I’ve been hearing such cool things about The Giver … though it seems like I should have read it quite a long time ago. I’m so curious about it.

        • 09/07/2011 at 8:20 pm

I read the whole trilogy. The Giver was the best of the three, but it is worth reading all of them. It is the early form of the Dystopian novels that are so popular right now.

    9. 09/07/2011 at 4:55 pm

I absolutely loved The Monsters of Templeton – it was just the right amount of magical realism, ghost work and a little bit of Sarah Addison Allen flavor to it all. Loved it!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:59 pm

Oh goodie … another fan of The Monsters of Templeton! I’ve had it on my shelves FOREVER and don’t remember now why I picked it up. I’m glad to be finally reading it.

    10. 09/07/2011 at 2:58 pm

I always want so badly to participate in this challenge — it seems so perfect for the season, plus EVERYONE does it! The genres covered, though, are precisely the ones I don’t enjoy reading, so I end up watching while everyone else posts about their RIP reads. Maybe I’ll try some classics…they might not be as creepy. Enjoy!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:58 pm

It is pretty ubiquitous isn’t it? I’m SURE you could find a few reads that would fit … the classics are FULL of good choices. I read Rebecca last year. How about some Poe?

    11. 09/07/2011 at 2:51 pm

      Good luck!

    12. 09/07/2011 at 2:28 pm

Ohhhhhhhh you have some great choices, can’t wait for your reviews. I’m doing the Challenge also. Fun fun

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:57 pm

It is a fun challenge isn’t it? I love seeing all the books that everyone reads. I’ll be over to check out your list too!

    13. 09/07/2011 at 1:28 pm

I’m participating too! Also, I hope you enjoy The Giver. I first read that book in jr. high and I loved it!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:57 pm

I think it is such a fun challenge … and without a huge time commitment. By the time I’m tired of reading a predefined list of books, it is done. Have fun … and I’m superexcited about The Giver. I can’t believe I haven’t read it before.

    14. 09/07/2011 at 12:32 pm

I feel like I’m the only book blogger on the planet not doing the RIP challenge (or at least the only one that’s too wimpy for creepy books). I hope you have a lot of fun reading your scary books though! :)

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:56 pm

I believe you might be the only one not R.I.Ping!!! I’m sure you could find some good gothics/mysteries that aren’t too creepy!

    15. 09/07/2011 at 8:57 am

This is a great challenge, and it seems like everyone is joining! I would love to join this one as well, but I am not that great at challenges, so I am unsure. You’ve picked some great books though!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:55 pm

I joined in last year after seeing what seemed like the entire book blogging community participating and having such fun. It is a pretty easy challenge though … and not too much pressure. It is just two months and a few scary books or movies or short stories — what’s not to love!? Join in!!!!!

    16. 09/07/2011 at 8:49 am

The Giver is so good! And it has one moment in it that completely caught me off-guard and caused me to shiver, not in creepiness, but sheer amazement of what I didn’t realize the whole time. I hope you love it!

I’m listening to In the Woods right now, my first Tana French, and enjoying it very much so far!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:54 pm

I’m really excited about The Giver. I can’t believe I’ve never read it!! I’ve heard so many cool things about it that it has a bit of a mystique to it for me. And I’m seriously in love with Tana French’s books! “In the Woods” was fantastic. I hope you can handle some ambiguity though or you might be unhappy!

    17. 09/07/2011 at 8:41 am

Fantastic list, and I agree with Sandy – try for Faithful Place on audio! I already read it (and loved it) but I want to listen to the audio like you wouldn’t believe!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:53 pm

I already have the book form … darnit! I hope she is writing another book. I’ll do that on audio for sure!

IMHO, The Monsters of Templeton could have used a generous going over with the big fat red pencil! The basic story was good but man, oh man, can Groff go off on tangents. Digression is her middle name.

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:53 pm

Hmmmm…so far yours is the only negative stuff I’ve heard about The Monsters of Templeton. Still, if the basic story is good, I can forgive a lot of sins.

    19. 09/07/2011 at 7:58 am

I don’t know if you can get Faithful Place on audio, but if you can, I would recommend it. So you can get a quick crush on that Irish accent. Nesbo is good stuff too, but Redbreast isn’t a quick or easy read. It IS satisfying though!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:52 pm

Well, you are completely responsible (with Jill) for my Nesbo experience! I’m trying him because of you!!!

And I already have the book format for Faithful Place. Darn. I bet that would be a good audio! By the way, I finally listened to an audio narrated by Scott Brick, who so many bloggers rave about, and he was wonderful. Now I need to try your Simon Vance!

    20. 09/07/2011 at 7:54 am

Very cool to have you joining in again this year. Thank you so much.

I’ve been looking at the Jo Nesbo books at the bookstore for weeks now so I look forward to your review of his book if you get a chance to read it.

The idea is definitely for this to be low pressure and I’m happy you are seeing that as well. Hope your reading is wonderful.

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:44 pm

I’ve heard so many bloggers raving about Jo Nesbo that I had to give him a try. And THANK YOU for such a wonderfully fun and low-key challenge. It really is a good time.

    21. 09/07/2011 at 7:13 am

This is a favorite challenge of mind. Good list Jenner. I like Blacklands a lot.

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:50 pm

It is now a favorite of mine too! And I’ve been hearing so many good things about Blacklands. I’m excited to read it.

    22. 09/07/2011 at 12:34 am

I suspect I should try this, but the dark books are hard for me. I think they come back and haunt me when I am alone in the darkness. I am more a happy ending kind of woman. I envy people who can read the scary things. I think the most scary I get is Dean Koontz. Love him!! Can’t sleep when I am reading one of his books though.

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:50 pm

I can’t go to scary either. You can do mysteries or gothic — which might not be too scary. It is a really fun challenge.

    23. 09/06/2011 at 10:18 pm

The Giver is one of my favorite books ever. I LOVED Faithful Place. As much as I love Lippman, The Most Dangerous Thing fell flat for me. I will be interested to see what you think of it. Have fun with RIP!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:49 pm

I’m really excited about The Giver. I keep seeing it over and over and felt “I really should read it.” And I’ve been saving Faithful Place because it is the last one I have left to read from Tana French. Too bad about the Lippman book. I won it from LibraryThing’s Early Reviewer program and sometimes they don’t arrive in a timely manner so I hope I get it to read for RIP!

    24. 09/06/2011 at 9:59 pm

Let me which one is the best. I cant read four books in one month! On a side note I really enjoyed what alice forgot and pur discussion on it is this Friday. I will let you know what everyone else thought

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:48 pm

So glad you liked What Alice Forgot. I’m dying to get a report from the book club. And you can read just ONE BOOK for this challenge I think!

    25. 09/06/2011 at 9:54 pm

oooh creepy! i love tana french! you are
      the book guru.

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:47 pm

It was love at first book for me and Tana French. I’ve been saving this one because it is last one she has written. I’m hoping she will have a fourth book out soon!!

    26. 09/06/2011 at 9:21 pm

Yay! I’m glad you’re doing it again! I’m familiar with many of the authors you’ve chosen and really look forward to seeing if you like “Blacklands” as much as I did.

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:46 pm

I’m excited to see if I like Blacklands as much as you did too! It is such a fun challenge, isn’t it?

    27. 09/06/2011 at 8:57 pm

Oh, I LOVED The Monsters of Templeton! (I just haven’t reviewed it yet, but I loved it.) Hope you enjoy it too … and happy R.I.P!

      • 09/07/2011 at 7:46 pm

Oh goodie! I’m glad to hear that you liked Monsters of Templeton. I’ve had it on my bookshelves FOREVER and never read it. I figured now was a good time. Happy R.I.Ping!
