Three Wonderful Things
by Jenners • 10/11/2011 • BB/The Little One • 77 Comments
Last week was a wonderful week for three different reasons.
Reason 1: BB lost his first tooth!
He is one of the very last of his friends to lose a tooth. I was beginning to wonder if he was ever going to part with one, but then all of a sudden, one tooth got very very loose. When it started to get a little gray and his gums got red, I took matters into my latex-gloved hands and helped nature along.
Reason 2: BB was invited to test for the talented and gifted program at his school … and was accepted!
BB’s teacher recommended him for his school’s talented and gifted program, but each kid has to take a test and achieve a certain score in order to be accepted into the program. BB took the test last week (75 questions in 30 minutes!!) and passed! We are so proud of him … and you can bet that both Mr. Jenners and I are taking credit for his smarts! (HAHA! It is all him. We’re just so pleased and happy for him.)
Reason 3: I won a super cool giveaway!
Lena at Lena Sledge’s Blog had a really cool giveaway for Banned Books Week and guess who won the top prize (out of 367 entries)? Moi! It was an amazing giveaway. Not only did I win five (yes … FIVE) amazing books, but I won a super gigantic fake book, into which Lena put the five books I won. I’ve always wanted a fake book to hide things in … and now my dream has come true. Thanks Lena!
Here’s hoping you have a week as wonderful as the one I had last week!

Someone was having a great week. I hope you celebrated with something chocolatey.
But of course!
Congratulations all the way ’round!
wow, that is wonderful about your son and the gifted program! congratulations to your little guy!
they look so cute with teeth missing.
and thats great you won the books, enjoy them. I read The Road and cried a little, it was a deep read. The Lovely Bones teared me up as well, I might just be a crying mess…lol. Cool fake book too.
I did read both The Road and The Lovely Bones and I would agree that they are both emotional deep books. I’ve not read them for quite some time and they are both revisiting again at some point.
Congrats to the boy! That gifted program will open many doors for him. Awesome news
He had his first class the other day and got homework from it that he was actually EXCITED about doing. That has never happened before! ; )
All so exciting!! I envy that gigantic fake book. I WANT one. I’ve even considered making one, but the thought of cutting up a book…*shudder*
This fake book is actually more like a box constructed to look like a book rather than a book that has a space cut into it. That would be interesting though. It would have to be a book that I hated though.
Congrats!!! What a wonderful week!! My son has been in gifted since the end of kinder and it has been the best thing EVER for him! He’s now in a program for the exceptionally gifted and I’ve seen such a HUGE improvement in his behavior. He was ALWAYS getting into trouble at school because he would get bored because they were not challenging him enough in regular class (but they were supposed to be….but that’s a whole ‘nother story). Now he’s in a class that lets him move at his own pace (he’s in 2nd grade and currently doing mostly 3rd grade work). I hope that BB thrives in gifted! It’s a wonderful program for kids! And I’m totally not letting my kids see this post about the tooth. They get $1 for their teeth. I don’t want them to see that the tooth fairy is more generous at your house. lol. I’m cheap like that.
That is great about your son!! My brother had that same problem in school. He was bored and got in trouble all the time because he wasn’t being challenged. It took a lot of work by my mom to find a way for him to flourish instead of get in trouble. She actually started a talented and gifted program herself at the school. (This was WAY back in the day … and it was a Catholic school and they had no funding.) I’m glad your son has found his way to a good place early on.
My girl is almost 5 1/2 and she has yet to lose a tooth – argh! But seriously $5? You are making this cheapo tooth fairy look bad.
Congrats on BB getting into the gifted program – so cool. Our son tested last spring and didn’t make it – but I knew something had to have gone wrong on the test so I appealed and he made it in. Sadly now he’s on the waiting list tho.
Congrats to you both – because it is the parents making their kid ready for the challenges – you know that.
I was all set to give $1 but then our neighbor (who is the mother to my son’s best friend) started talking about how she gives $20 per tooth! Can you believe that? So now I feel like the cheapo tooth fairy.
I’m glad you fought for your son, though it is too bad that he is on the waiting list. My son went to his first “special” class for the program and said there were only 2 kids in it — him and one other. Seemed kind of weird to me.
Those are three great things! Glad to see our tooth fairy isn’t the only one that pays $5 a pop- which I thought was way too steep- but the daddy tooth fairy insisted. Does not surprise me one bit that your son is super smart
And congrats on the win! That is awesome.
We were going to go lower with the tooth fairy thing but then I found out our neighbors are paying $20 per tooth! That is insane! I didn’t want to look THAT cheap by comparison.
Way to go BB – what a talented kid!
I’m really proud of him. I found out today he was one of only two kids who passed the test!
Congrats on having a smart, toothless kid! Wait … that doesn’t sound quite right.
Z is a tooth-losing maniac. Right now he is waiting for the 4th (top front) to grow in and the next two bottom ones are already loose and the new ones have actually poked up behind them. I’m afraid he will be missing three teeth at once and school picture day is in a couple weeks! Yikes!
That will make for a classic school photo!! It is a wonder if he’ll be able to eat and talk. I thought more would come out right after that one but so far nothing!
Congrats! These are three totally wonderful things! Just watch, his teeth are likely to drop out so quick you are going to go broke. I believe each one of these kids net the same ultimately. And the gifted program is awesome! My son just finished his fourth yated this past year and I was very sad. It’s so great for their creative little brains.
I thought we’d see the neighbor tooth come out soon but nothing yet! The Tooth Fairy will be visiting him when he’s 30! And he goes to his first gifted program class tomorrow … I can’t wait to hear what he does in it.
What an awesome week you had!!!!! Congrats on the big win! I never win anything………………..
Well, you won the Stinky Dog contest!!
Congrats to BB on loosing his first tooth and on being accepted into the gifted school program!
Congrats to you on your big book win!
Thanks!
The big fake book alone would have been a super prize! Congrats on your win. Enjoy all your new books.
I know! It could have arrived empty and I still would have felt like a big winner.
Congratulations! That’s quite a prize!
Well done to BB too!
It was a very generous and amazing prize! And she gave out 5 other versions too!
The Girl is afraid of:
The Tooth Fairy
Santa Clause
The Easter Bunny
Which is one sense makes my life a whole lot easier, but in another, drives me batty. No one can enter our house…period. Even if it’s to leave her presents, money and chocolate!
Congrats on all these wonderful things.
I’d pretty much let anyone in my house if they were going to give me presents, money or chocolate! That must be a challenge in some way. Do you just not give her anything for those events!?
Yay on the first tooth! The tooth fairy around here was unreliable. Half the time she’d forget to show up and once even left a candy bar! ;o)
A candy bar!!!! Tsk tsk. I guess the Tooth Fairy was trying to drum up more business.
Obviously a very proud mom, your love for BB shines through. Here’s wishing you even more wonderful things.
I am very proud of him. I was just bursting with happiness all week whenever I looked at him.
Congrats to your son for making it into the talented gifted program, what an honor and a legacy that will be. Cheers to your son for losing his first tooth, oh the right of passage we all take, we lose teeth, get new ones, then lose them again.
My daughter asked the tooth fairy for a pack of magic markers in her letter under her pillow, so I had to run to the 24 hour drugstore to get some. She was so amazed and happy in the morning. The midnight run was so worth it.
Thanks for sharing what you won, I truly appreciate it and hope you enjoy all your books and the fake book. Can’t wait to see what your postcards will look like. You have to post a picture once you have them made. I have tons of stickers, postcards, ink pens, buttons, labels, etc. I think I went a little overboard, but they actually come in handy. Enjoy!
It was a really exciting week for my son. I didn’t know you could request specific items from the tooth fairy! : ) I’ll just keep that little information to myself. HAHA!
And thank you again for the generous giveaway. It was so wonderful! I read two of the books a long time ago but they are ones I want to revisit again one day … and now I don’t have to justify getting a book again that I already read. I’m excited to explore the other two as well. And I’ll keep you updated on my blog promotion swag! HAHA!
Oh, wow! It really was a great week over there! And I am amazed that teeth are going for $5 apiece! I am also really psyched that you won such a great prize pack. I can’t wait to hear what you think of the books.
I’m amazed that teeth are going for $5 each! We were going to do $1 but then he talked to his best friend (and our neighbor) and they get $20 per tooth!!! Can you imagine!? I had a little talk with the mom and said “You need to rethink your tooth payments, Missy!” : )
BB had a crazy week! I am impressed he let you pull it out. My cousin had her first tooth practically hanging out of her mouth because she wouldn’t let anyone pull it!
Well, it took some convincing and I was only allowed to try twice. If it hadn’t come out easily, we would have left it. It was kind of a weird … I felt like I was torturing him or something. He had the big test for the gifted program the next day and I was concerned it would fall out during the test and mess him up!! It was just as good that I pulled it at home as there was some blood and he FREAKED! : )
Hooray to BB on losing his first tooth and being accepted into the gifted program. Two really huge things for him. That’s a lot to be proud off. That is so awesome!
What a great win! I have never seen a giant book box like that but I sure would like one.
Have a great day!
It was a big week in BB’s life … and it was fun to see him grow up so much and have these experiences. I was bursting with pride. And I was amazed how big the fake book was … it was gigantic! I loved it!
Congratulations to BB! The first tooth is always really exciting. Congrats of the gifted program too- I’m sure he gets all his smarts from you
Research says it’s down to the number of books you have in the house (one to tell the hubby when he complains about the number of books you own)
I love that giant book too! What a fantastic prize! I hope this week is just as exciting for you.
Thank you thank you thank you for the ammunition to justify having books and getting more books into the house!!! Just think, if I had my way, he’d be graduating high school now! HAHA!
What I love is that two of the things YOU think are wonderful are also things BB thinks are wonderful!
I gave my daughter one of those fake books (the size that slides into your bookcase and blends in) that came with a key so that she could “hide” stuff in it.
Congratulations all around!
I saw that fake book that you gave to your daughter and have been coveting it ever since. Maybe I’ll ask Santa for it. I love the concept of hiding things … and what better place than in a fake book!
Congratulations on all three things! How exciting that BB has hit a big moment in his childhood life (the whole losing the first tooth thing). So does that mean it’s the beginning of his transition into the adult world?
It’s great that BB got invited to be tested for the gifted program and got in! That’s pretty awesome. Jason had the same thing when he was a kid too and he also got in. Now look at him! He’s working in a big financial firm, living abroad in Japan and being all smart and stuff
I think BB’s going to have quite an amazing future too!
Congratulations on all those books too! It’s like a dream come true for you to get so many books and not have to pay for them
Enjoy your new reads!
The tooth thing is pretty big!! I remember my first loose tooth quite clearly. I played with that thing for WEEKS before it fell out. He looks so different with the big gap in his smile!
And I hope BB does have a future as bright as Jason’s life is now! That would fantastic!
These are three totally wonderful things! Just watch, his teeth are going to fall out so fast you are going to go broke. I think all these kids net out the same in the end. And the gifted program is awesome! My son just finished his fifth (and final) year in gifted last year and I was very sad. It is so good for their creative little brains.
I’m excited to see what he gets to do. At this age, they meet twice a month to work on logic problems (!!!) and he’ll get some extra homework (wait till he learns that!) but when he gets older, they do a lot more and even get an extra field trip. He has to qualify each year though so that will be interesting.
Love it!
I think it’s very cool she “hid” the banned books in a fake book.
She even said that in the contest. You didn’t know what books you’d get when you won … it was a surprise!
Congrats to the Little One on the tooth and the smarts! Ah, the bloody crater of childhood- how well I remember! I think you can give yourselves a LITTLE bit of the credit for the genius!
BTW Just finished Ready Player One after neglecting my children all day. LOOOOOOOOVED IT! Now my husband has started it and is hooked! Thanks for the recommend!
So so happy that you loved Ready Player One as much as I did. I’m trying to get Mr. Jenners to try it to as I think he would love it as much as I did … maybe even more because he played a lot of the vintage video games!
Creature was also in what I liked to refer to as the G&T, she was put forward by the school (this seems to be how it works in the uk). she once went on a week thing with the YGT organisation and had the best time, she said it was so nice to be around people who didn’t think you were weird for being clever or wanting to know stuff. Hope you son gets some benefits from it, if nothing else it’s nice to feel special.
much love
martine
What a lovely way of looking at it! I know that the kids get more and more cool things when they stick with the program — like extra field trips and stuff. I’m just happy for him as it did give him a huge boost in confidence! Like you said, it is nice to feel special. And we made a big deal out it … took him out to dinner and everything.
Triple joy! First “lost” tooth, first great test, and a big pile of books! Enjoy it all!!!
It was a really great week! You don’t get weeks like that often.
First loose and “gone” tooth? Awesome! Does the tooth fairy visit in your house or do mom and dad just hand over the cash? We only had the tooth fairy until my daughter was 7 and a half then logic kicked in, tripping over Santa along the way!
And what a prize you won; that’s fantastic! My favorite in the stack is Lovely Bones
It was funny because I asked him about the tooth fairy the night he lost the tooth and he was real wishy-washy about it. You can tell that he kind of thinks it might be bogus but he isn’t quite sure because then it calls into question other things (like Santa). When I asked him, he said “I think it might be just you and daddy but I’m not sure. I think I’ll leave it under my pillow anyway.” I decided to pay him $20 from ME just for this tooth because it was the first one. I hope he doesn’t find it in my desk drawer because then the tooth fairy thing is out of the bag. It is weird when they are kind of catching on to things but still want to believe too!
BB’s had a great week! $5? I better tell our tooth fairy to start saving
There is great variance in what the tooth fairy pays, I’ve found. Our neighbor gives $20 (!!!) per tooth, and others pay $1. Since he knows about the $20 per tooth thing, I settled on $5. Still seems like a lot! At least he only has 20 some teeth!
Glad your son lost a tooth. That’s a big deal My son is late with teeth things too. He has lost hte two bottom and they are in, but hte two top ones have been missing for six months with no sign of anything adult. Two weeks ago he ripped out a molar, said it was loose, we went to the dentist for a cleaning and they were not impressed. going tomorrow for a spacer. ugh…teeth
My son is incredibly slow in tooth-related stuff too!! I swear that he will be in high school and still losing teeth. So far, it is just the one. I thought the other one next to it would follow quickly but nada. And what the heck is a spacer? Wait … I don’t think I want to know.
Cool prize! And congrats to LE (Little Einstein)!!!
Oh … I love Little Einstein! : )
Congrats on everything!
I’ve read “the lovely bones”. It is a good book. The movie wasn’t too bad (had some cool special effects) but of course the book is always better. I’m trying to remember if I’ve read “the world below” or if I’m thinking of her other books. I don’t think I’ve read the other books that you won. I’m sure you will have a blast reading everything.
I read The Lovely Bones ages and ages ago … long enough that I think I will reread it. I remember loving it, but I’m hesitant about the movie.
Good things do happen in 3′s too – congrats on the first tooth loss and a wealthy tooth fairy in NJ, to your smarty pants son, and to new book wins.
Hey … the tooth fairy in this house is CHEAP! My neighbor’s tooth fairy pays $20 per tooth!!
You did have a great week! Here’s hoping this is only the beginning and you have more wonderful things to come.
And I wish you a wonderful week and month and year to come as well! Let’s all hope for big fake books filled with books!
Congratulations you’ve had a great week, BB is really Getting B. All these wonderful things that make you feel like you’re good parents, and you are, trust me, if you weren’t … I’,m really wondering how you’ll like The Road, I got it for Christmas from my boys, I did like it, a little dark, but good. I have drowning ruth as well, but he big fake book is really cool, you could hide things, and your house would look tidy. Obviously I need a few more…
Wouldn’t it be great to have big fake books all around your house where you could hide all the junk we accumulate and don’t want to throw out? Then we’d look smart and neat!!
And I read The Road a few years back … it was dark and depressing but I could see reading it again.
Those are all super awesome things!! Congrats to BB on the tooth and his GT program.
And to you on those books, especially the big fake one!! I want one of those now.
The big fake books is awesome!! I’m actually using it to store my piano books since I don’t have a piano bench. It is perfect for that! (Plus I’m hiding some chocolate in there too. Ssshhhh…don’t tell anyone.)
