No Take A Chance Challenge for 2012

I’ve had a few e-mails asking if I was going to do the Take A Chance Challenge for 2012. The answer is no. I’m burnt out on reading challenges in general, so it seemed hypocritical to host a challenge.
Perhaps taking off a year from reading challenges will get me back in the mood … so it is possible there will be a Take A Chance Challenge 4 in 2013. Or perhaps I’ll be inspired and come up with a shorter version of the challenge and introduce it later in the year. I’ve found that I tend to enjoy the shorter and focused reading challenges (like the RIP Challenge) the most.
I’m sure you can “fill the gap” with all the other brilliantly creative reading challenges out there. A good place to “shop” for challenges is the blog A Novel Challenge. (You can also publicize your own reading challenge there.)
Have fun with your 2012 reading challenges…and remember I reserve the right to change my mind!

I’m with you . . . I’m all burned out on challenges too. I’ve decided to take a long winters nap in January and regroup.
I am so with you!
We really were on the same wavelength about hosting challenges, weren’t we?
I’m finally catching up on some of my blog reading this morning.
Great minds think alike!
I’m not going to do mine again, either. But I do love participating in challenges. Yours was fun, even if it looks like I won’t finish all 10.
I’m not finishing all 10 either … and I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one giving up hosting a challenge!
Since I’m trying way too hard to finish up a challenge by the end of the year I have promised myself no challenges next year. I am so looking forward to aimless reading!
Me too! It will be freeing!
I know what you mean, sometimes its just too much. I do enjoy shorter challenges like the RIP Challenge too because I can finish them easier.
And you don’t have time to get burnt out or resentful of reading a certain set amount of books.
You are right to lay low on it for awhile. Do what you want, read what you want, and the passion will come back.
That is usually the key to fixing any kind of burnout I think … laying low.
Good for you for saying no. I often struggle to turn things down. I hope you’ll still post reviews though. It’s how I get my “fun” reading down – living vicariously through you.
It won’t stop me from reading and reviewing … just reading in a structured way!
I began blogging a few months ago and at first I thought it might be exciting to take part in a challenge. But I’ve begun to realize that there are so many books that I’d rather read because I want to than because I have to! And sometimes too much structure turns reading into a stress rather than an activity that helps unwind :/ But like you said, it’s likely that I might change my mind about reading challenges as well.
That has exactly been my experience with the reading challenges. That is why I like the short focused ones … like for a month or so that have very loose guidelines.
well, since I never do challenges, who am I to speak?
True that! : )
I love the challenge which is exactly why I’m saying thank you for not hosting it this year. I’m determined not to sign up for any, but this one would have tested my strength.
We must be on the same wavelength!
Jenners, I am not familiar with the challenge you used to host, but it sounds terrific. If you host it again, I will take a good look at it. Thanks very much for the tip about where to shop for (or submit) reading challenges!
It was fun when I first thought of it but I’ve grown tired of it … and I’m fresh out of ideas. The challenge blog has a gazillion listed … so many variations and creative ones out there!
I hear you. I am terrible at year-long challenges, though. I find the only ones I concentrate on are ones that only last for a short period of time…
Maybe we have ADHD- Reading Challenge Edition. I do the same thing with year-long (or worse yet perpetual) challenges.
I’ve never been good at completing reading challenges. Something always seems to take precedence.
I realize I like to read based on my moods, which doesn’t tend to lend itself to reading challenges. A few, really focused and short ones can be fun though.
I can certainly understand and would also understand if you changed your mind.
I’m only signing up for those that will help me whittle down my TBR stack this year. I’m hoping to get the push I need to remove a few of them off the shelf that have been there far too long.
I need that same push!! I’m going to try really hard to get my shelves emptied out … so I can fill them with new books!
I can understand! Have a terrific challenge-free reading year!
(Love the Christmas blog decor!)
Glad you like my “holiday” decorations! I spent way too long the other night working on it!
I’m always a little hesitant of starting book challenges because it seems to dispirit me! Just stumbled across your blog and i’m really enjoying it. Thanks!
I always start out excited (mostly about finding the books) but then I lose steam and resent being “structured.” The short ones work better for me … and ones with shorter time spans. Glad you found me! I’ll be paying you a visit soon!
I also hesitate to commit to challenges every year, because I always lose steam and leave them uncompleted, and then feel badly about myself. I am thinking of perhaps unofficially joining a few, but nothing set in stone.
I’m exactly the same! Worse yet, I pooped out on my own challenge! How bad is that?
Yes, never say never and remember as a lady it is your right to change your mind.
Changing one’s mind is always a lady’s perogative!
I’m laying low on challenges for 2012 as well, so I understand.
Sometimes you just need a break I think. I’m looking forward to a year of unstructured reading!
