Romeo Meets His Juliet

If it seems that I’ve been a bit of a blog slacker lately, you’re right. The reason is this:
If Juliet had a personal ad, it would read something like this:
6-month old female Havanese seeks distinguished older gentledog (10 to 14 months) for roughhousing, chasing and wrestling. Likes short bursts of speed on the grass, food (any kind), digging. Willing to lick on the first date. Will not snarl or growl no matter how close you get …. but will return the favor by not recognizing personal boundaries of any kind. Loves dog toys and nibbling on toes. Dislikes not being in the center of any action. Not yet potty trained … willing to pee or poop anywhere, anytime. Call 1-800-IAM-NUTS.How is Romeo taking this new addition to the household? Well, the first few days, he was a bit standoffish … as if waiting for this young upstart to go away and leave him alone already. After all, Juliet showed no compunction about using his bed, toys, food bowl, water bowl or his body as a jungle gym. Yet, over the past few days, he seems to warming up to her. See the love in the photo below? (Yes … I had to force them to stand that close together but he didn’t try to bite her face off or growl at her.)
Although I am somewhat second-guessing my decision to get another dog (especially a non-potty-trained puppy), Juliet has a way of making you fall in love with her. And after seeing how much fun Romeo and Juliet have chasing and playing with each other (as well as doing “yard patrols” like veteran cop team), I know we made the right decision.
Update: Well, now I’m second-guessing myself again as the link below shows you the scene in the family room about 5 seconds ago. (Did I mention that it is pouring rain and both dogs are soaking wet???!!!!)

You are absolutely crazy!
That has occurred to me more than once since she has arrived.
So cute. I’m jealous. I want a new fluff ball, but with a husky, it would have to be a dog able to stand their ground.
My sisters-in-law have a husky and Romeo bosses him around so that might not be so!

Oh my, I can only imagine the fun this is. NOT! Lol. Really though I wish I had gotten Sam’s brother when I got him. I really regret it now. It would have been nice for him to have a playmate. Juliet is adorable – sounds a lot like Sam with the nipping toes and such. Watch your earlobes too. Lol. Sam is getting to be so good now that sometimes I miss those puppy days although when they were happening I thought I would die. I look forward to seeing more of the two of them.
I have some serious moments of regretting getting the second dog. Like Sam, Romeo is now soooo easy. I think I forgot (or repressed) how frustrating those puppy days and house training can be. Still, seeing them play together is a true joy.
You got a second dog! She’s adorable! The Huz keeps talking about getting another, but I honestly don’t know if I could handle it.
I’m honestly not sure I can handle it. It is challenging.
Puppy love. She looks like snoopy. Who couldn’t love that face??
I know!! Her coloring is just like Snoopys. Her cute face saves her!
OHHH!! You got another adorable dog for me to swoon over, I see! How freaking adorable!!!!
I think these two will generate a lot of blog fodder and might cause a cuteness overload.
Oh, how could anyone NOT fall in love with Juliet (and Romeo for that matter)?!? The video is hilarious. I loved when Romeo finally ran out of steam and Juliet just kept on going!
That thing with Romeo running out of steam and Juliet keeping on? That happens A LOT! She has a ton of energy!!
Oh my gosh!!!!!!!! They are so cute together. And you picked the perfect names for them.
I often thought of getting Diego a little friend too, just trying to convince hubby! lol That’s good that Romeo warmed up to her. They look like plushies!
I think we really had no choice but to name her Juliet. It was a no brainer. And let me tell you, it is a lot more work to have a second dog but seeing them make friends and play together is so worth it.
Adorable! What a great distraction
Love your ad too. My two youngest have been begging for a dog just like Romeo and Juliet. The funny thing is that they are usually running for the hills when they see a dog. I have a feeling that they would fall in love with these two cuties!
They are adorably cute together but get in twice as much trouble. Juliet is a bit of a digger and she has been “aerating” our lawn for us. Urgh!
Awwwwww!!!!!! Way, way, way too cute!!!!!!
It is an overdoes of cuteness, isn’t it?
OMG, she’s adorable! I think it’s terrific you got a playmate and friend for Romeo. A puppy needs attention and care but I think you get so much love and fun from a pet. Juliet is a total cutie, I can see why you fell in love with her. I’m looking forward to the photos and stories, good, bad & crazy!
I think Juliet will be great for Romeo and vice versa. I do think that animals do better when they have a playmate that is like them. Seeing them romp around together just makes me happy.
Yes, you have lost it – but only in the nicest sense of the phrase. Hubs decided we needed a second dog, so adopted a half-horse, half sasquatch from a local rescue. Things could be worse.
Your new family member sounds … uh … very interesting to say the least.
I only recently discovered that Havanese was even a breed of dog but oh my God they are cute. I saw a teeny little Havanese-poodle mix puppy in the park recently, and here is another Havanese that is super adorable. How do you ever get anything done? I would seriously just spend all my time putting them into adorable positions and then photographing them.
Havanese isn’t a well known breed — they seem pretty rare still. Most people have never heard of them but I think they will grow in popularity as they are beyond cute and have awesome personalities.
Aw, they are so cute together!
They are awfully cute together … and loud and messy. Good thing they’re cute!
Awe! But you can’t seperate Romeo and Juliete! Good luck with potty training and all the fun a new puppy brings
I’m hoping that Romeo teaches Juliet the ropes regarding potty training and it happens faster than it did for him.
Juliet is absolutely adorable. We got our first puppy last year and she has changed our lives. I never knew what it was like to have a dog before, and I love her so much. I found your blog via a post on Farm Lane Books. Nice to find it!
Lindsay
Glad to meet you!! Puppies do have a way of upending your life, don’t they? We got Romeo a year ago when he was three months old and fell in love with him … so much so that we wanted to give him a play mate to ensure his total happiness.
That is lovely. I don’t know if we could handle more than one though yet!
oh, now I’m experiencing a serious case of puppy love. Juliet is adorable and the name is perfect. Congrats on the new addition to your family.
We really had no choice in the name, did we? If it had been a boy, I guess we would have had to name him “Julian.”
YAY! puppy love. I just met a Havenese the other dog and thought it was a designer-dog but was promptly reprimanded and then gently informed. VERY CUTE. Have fun! My two yo Esther is only now starting to maybe calm down. NOT
Havanese are just the most lovable fun dogs. I’d never heard of them until I started researching dogs that were good for people with allergies (both my husband and I are allergic) and they seemed like a perfect fit for our family. And I’m hoping it takes less than two years for Juliet to calm down .. but I”m doubting that!
Oh my goodness, how cute. I can understand Romeo being a little standoffish as this little cutie provides some big competition.
It is funny how different their personalities are. Juliet is very friendly and outgoing and courageous. Romeo is more reserved and aloof and nervous. I think they will balance each other out.
Too cute for words! What a darling pair! Best of luck with these two cuties–I hope they stay out of trouble.
They are getting into a lot of trouble actually … mostly due to Juliet, who, it turns out, is quite a digger.
She is so cute! I’m sure once she’s potty trained the stress level will go way down.
I know it will … I am clinging to that fact and praying for that day to arrive.
Oh goodness – you’ve certainly got your hands full then! The video wouldn’t load for me, but I’m guessing those pups are having a lot of fun?
I guess that one of those pups will be getting the snip before Juliet is mature enough to be on heat?
Both those pups are full on adorable!
The video was of two wet dogs chasing each other around and around the couch. Exhausting (and muddy too). And Romeo is neutered but we’re going to get Juliet spayed so I don’t have to deal with a dog in heat. I’m not sure I could cope with that!!
too cute. But man do you have your hands full. Are you having empty nest syndrome with BB in school all day? Wanna work in the cafeteria with me?
I don’t know why I felt compelled to do this. I guess my life was too easy with the return to school!
You are a brave, brave woman, positively saintly.
Replace “saintly” with “insane” and you’ve got it.
Lovely little Juliet. We did miss Romeo though.
I’m sure they will provide lots of blog fodder!
How cute is this!?!?!
No, you’re not crazy…I’m the one that’s crazy since we took in another stray this summer (a puppy at that, who is now all teeth) bringing our total to SEVEN!
I think Juliet is precious and JUST what Romeo needed!! I loved the clip, too – so much energy!! I hope we’ll get to see more photos of them together.
Seven dogs? That helps to put things in perspective a bit! I’m stopping at two!
I think he’s met his match. That video chase is hysterical.
I think he met his perfect match. They are so darn cute together and having a ball playing and chasing each other. I’m just waiting for them to curl up and sleep together … that hasn’t happened yet.
So cute! I’m amazed you have another puppy so soon – mine was so much hard work I’m considering never having another puppy again (getting a well-trained adult rescue instead!) It was great to see the video, although they were moving so fast I could hardly see them. At least you wont have to walk them so far – looks as though they are wearing themselves out nicely!
I’m kind of wondering why I got another puppy too. Mainly we wanted a dog younger than Romeo so he got to be top dog (though I’m not sure that Juliet is really respecting that) and he is still a puppy himself. I think I also forgot how hard it can be in the beginning.
So cute. I can’t show my kids, though. They’ve been begging for a dog, but we have to wait until we move home. Juliet is adorable and I’m glad that Romeo hasn’t bitten her face off.
Oh yes … hide this from the kids by all means! : )
Well, the pooping is an issue, but when they are having fun, playing together, you know it is a great idea!
The playing does make up for an awful lot. It is so fun to see them wrestling and running around together.
Who’s a good dog? Years ago we made the same ‘mistake’ of getting a second dog. No regrets.
It is a wonderful mistake to make, isn’t it? As hard as it is sometimes, I don’t regret it. I know they will both benefit from having each other to grown up with.
Awww, so sweet!
Now I have double the fun and double the cuteness!
I love it when my friends have dogs. That way I get all the fun and none of the hard part.
You are a very wise woman!
Yeah! I love it. She is adorable. Take lots of photos because they really do grow fast – much faster than kids and that puppy stage is so sweet. It’s a defense mechanism when they do things like running through the house soaking wet. In time, I think Romeo will be happy for the companionship.
We used to have two Bolognese and once I bathed them and put them outside (they always need to go outside after a bath, if you know what I mean). This time, when they came in, they had rolled in mud and I had to re-bathe them. I know what you mean.
I think Romeo is happy to have a dog companion. People just can’t play with a dog like another dog. I mean, I’m not going to wrestle with him and bit his ears like Juliet does! : )
They’re so frickin’ cute! Hopefully, Juliet will be a quick study on that house-training business.
We had a pretty good day today (knock on wood), but I think that and then she inevitably has an accident in the house soon after.
I sure hope so! She’s been doing good today … knock on wood.
Oh how cute!!!! Puppies are the bestest….even if they are a ton of work. Congrats on the new edition to the family
I agree. There is nothing quite as cute (or troublesome) as a puppy. I’m glad I got to experience it twice.
This video was awfully cute. I especially liked the way Romeo finally just gave up and stood to the side and then Juliet tried to re-engage him. Hopefully the cuteness factor will get you through training!
Juliet is like Romeo’s personal trainer!! He isn’t as fast as her and I think he will have to catch up to her energy level (or she’ll have to slow down a bit).
Wow! congrats on the new addition! Will Mercutio be next?
No no no no no … we’re stopping with the titular characters!
How freakin’ adorable! I want one now!
Well what is stopping you — a love of clean carpets, uninterrupted sleep and a desire for a quiet house?
Haha…yes, all of that, plus the two critters I already have!
Oh man, you are a crazy lady! And of course I mean that in the nicest way.
What a pair of cuties!
I’m going to be the crazy dog lady soon!!
And then there were two…for now!
They look so cute together…
No no no … and then there were two. THE END. : )
She is adorable and a fitting companion to Romeo! That video – I could have shot a similar video earlier tonight as well. Rain makes for crazy puppies!
They get wet and it is like something triggers in them to run run run!
She is so cute! Both Romeo and Juliet look good together though that video gives me a headache just watching it. I hope they know that they’re siblings now (even though they’re not blood related) so come spring, they aren’t aren’t allowed to act out the story they are named after!
Well, Romeo is neutered and Juliet will be spayed soon so I think they won’t have a tragic love story!
OHMYGAWWWWWWWWWWWWD!!!!! I am in love with their names, their beautiful faces, everything……I want one!
Aren’t 3,435 kittens and two horses and god knows what else enough for you? : )
She’s adorable! But damn, that video exhausted me.
She is crazy fast and has an energy level that exceeds a childs. If we could bottle that, we could power an entire city!
OMG! Could they be any cuter? I think not! Two dogs is good since they have playmates (says she who has one dog). Have a great time with them!
When we went on our cruise, Romeo stayed with the dog sitter and a bunch of other dogs. There was another Havanese there and the dog sitter said he played and played and played with him all day. That is what ultimately decided us to get another dog — he seemed to be craving that doggie companionship. This is it though … one playmate is enough!
Do their families approve of their love? How could you resist a face like that?
Well, their moms are best buds so they said “OK.” Thank goodness they don’t live up to their namesakes!
